Hawk...he never won a title and the wildest things about him are that he still holds a ton of LSU AND NCAA records even thought is was ineligable as a freshman and played before the 3 point line was established. He was deadly from the outside....can you imagine?
yam - this sounds exactly like he never passed the damn ball. saw a movie about him once and how he missed the last shot to win a big game as an 8th grader and the rest of the team was high school kids. they all hated him bc he could sit on a chair and dribble around it etc but grew to like him as he was so good. to me - put lew alcindor on any college team back then and they would've won the title. he made average guys into All Americans. Some were good on their own and some weren't and Lew made then a dynasty! That's how great he was. He won a freaking NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks for Pete's sake! Forget the Lakers, Lew was winning well before that. If Pete was that good, he could've made LSU into a champion. Pete could've made guys into great players. He chose to score at will first and foremost. Big difference Yam. UCLA was not always great. Big Lew made them great and wasn't allowed to dunk back then either. Yam--shoeless joe book on amazon for like $17 bucks!! i am getting it next week. im not a big reader, but will read it since you endorsed it. if it sucks, i will send you a billl for $17 bucks. haha. ***clemens didn't need steroids to bulk up. he needed steroids to keep healthy as his body in 1998-1999 was falling apart like a 77 Pinto. Bonds was very jealous of Sosa and Bonds 68 and 70 hr seasons. here's my thing...i don't care if im on elephant steroids he still had to hit 1 pitch a game as he was intentionally walked for a record over 200 times in 2000 and 2001 and he still hit 73 home runs! 73! you still have to see the pitch, identiy what it is in .3 of a second and put it over the fence. simply amazing from bonds. cheater or not, his 2000 season and the other season where he batted .373 and was walker over 210 times was amazing. sad neither may never see cooperstown whereas if they didnt cheat, their first 10 yrs alone were hall worthy! |

His 6.5 APG indicated he did pass the ball. He also would have average 57 points a game had the 3 point line been in effect. He had to settle for 44.2 and that's a record I see standing for a very very lond time. It already has. His 1st college game as a frshman (not the varsity team) he threw up a triple double whic included 50 points. You are righ about the ball ahndling and there are countless stories about what he did with his dribbling. to me - put lew alcindor on any college team back then and they would've won the title. he made average guys into All Americans. Some were good on their own and some weren't and Lew made then a dynasty! That's how great he was. He won a freaking NBA title with the Milwaukee Bucks for Pete's sake! He chose to score at will first and foremost. Big difference Yam. UCLA was not always great. Big Lew made them great and wasn't allowed to dunk back then either. He did dunk and he was the one that caused the rule change I believe after his 1st year. You should also consider that just maybe Pete could have won a title if like Lew he played with 7 guys that went to the NBA. That's about 2 a year. We'll never know. By the way, Lew was at a school that won 9 of 11 or so and he wasn't there for that many. Yam--shoeless joe book on amazon for like $17 bucks!! i am getting it next week. im not a big reader, but will read it since you endorsed it. if it sucks, i will send you a billl for $17 bucks. haha. If you like the history it'll make you think. Two others that come to mind are Holtz's auto biography which I loved and The Mantle book from about ta year ago. The Mantle book is very good but extremely depressing. The guy was a mess and Joe Dimaggio was a piece of crap to play with. Joe's been blasted in a lot of books.
That's exactly what I think. Roids didn't get him there and the HOF was a lock. They kept him there. I agree but still contend that if you are headed towards becoming possibly the best ever you don't need the homers and we saw the changes in the number of homers he was hitting He doubled or tripled his count while juiced and told everyone he worked out 1 winter? Really? sad neither may never see cooperstown whereas if they didnt cheat, their first 10 yrs alone were hall worthy! Both should end up in. McGwire's numbers though all came from juice from what I've read. He was a string bean early in his college career. |

yam--amazing post on many levels! first--mcgwire was a string bean for team usa in the 84 olympics and in his years at usc and first 3 yrs at oakland. he broke the rookie hr record with 49 skinny as hell. so when did the steroids come in at? he was dominate for a power hitter as a skinny kid, so where was the advantage for the juice? i think any player accused or caught with steroids that have hall numbers should have on the bottom of their plaque with their other attributes and awards... *was found guilty or accused of using steroids. that's it. one notation and move on. |

yam-got the shoeless joe book for $19 used on amazon. It's an interesting read and I have others about him too. He was definately and enigma. what was the holtz book like? as a ND fan, i think he brought back ND to the forefront of college football. lost to bc which crippled the team. still should've played for the title. biggest mistake...making ron powlus be an option qb when he was slower than Peyton Manning. he broke every record at berwick as a passer and lou made him run the option? why lou, why?
mantle-saw the movie 61* and heard the stories. very sad, but his famous quote was "if i knew i was going to live this long, i would've taken better care of myself." his whole father's side died of hodgekins bf 41, so he thought he was next. his own son died from it and drugs and ironcially roger maris died from it. my sister had it when she was 32 and had chemo for a yr and has never been right since. she wacky now and not in a good way. ;o(
joe d-heard how he hated JFK and Sinatra for their tryst with Monroe. Was a real hardass! Wanted to be called "the greatest living player or hitting of all time" or some nonsense like that at yankees old timer day. please. put any of them multiple ws winners on other teams and they dont win squat. ford, berra, joe d, mantle. heard they blantantly stole from the kc athletes farm team in the 40's and 50's to build their own club and that's how they got maris.
if you average 57 a game--how the hell do you lose?

He averaged 44.2, the 57 was based on the fact that research shows he averaged about 13 baskets a game that would have been 3's. Without the 3's none of his records will get broken anyway.

McGwire had a brother who was a skinny kid too, Dan, played football at Iowa and then transferred out to a CA school, was a decent QB, but not top level.
I agree with the points you guys were throwing out, but you know, none of us have ever been in that position, it's hard to say what we would do, but I have to think that none of us would use the juice to prolong or be in a career, I would always feel I cheated no matter what. Not sure I could live with that. Sandusky, yay, now get that guy in jail, but I do feel bad for his wife, kids and grandkids, can't imagine what they feel right now, knowing husband/Dad/Grandpa was a child molestor, just creeps me out. |

had 2 interviews and waited 4 freaking weeks to hear back from this company...got rejected yesterday! and the job is still on the web, so they didn't even hire anyone yet for it and canned my chances like tuna. 4 freaking weeks of nothing.
now sandusky's adopted kid is coming forward saying he molesteted him. wow. the boys in prison are going to have a field day with him. the moment you stick the needle in your body, you should have guilt and remorse. none of these guys did or do, so screw them. |

Yeh Cat...Joe's last year, and a very mediocre one, was Micks 1st. The kid was 20 years old and Joe could have locked in his epitath just by mentoring him. H4 would have any and felt very tyhreatened by the arrival of "the kid".
Hawk, we really need to contemplate the statement you made to be fair. NONE os us can really be sure what we would have done so we have opinions but no history in the game on which to validate them. Good point. |

Keep at it my friend, I would say it is filled though, my wife is a healthcare recruiter and she sees postings all the time that are not taken down when a job gets filled, then folks apply and she has to waste time calling only to find out it is filled then has to call the candidate back to let them know.
But you are doing the right thing, applying and getting out there and getting interviews. It will happen for you. Yam - yeah I always try to wonder what I might do if in a similar situation, it's hard to put myself in that spot, but you know, these guys made millions and millions and then decided they wanted to compete longer but couldn't so took the juice...makes me respect Koufax even more cause he got out and was fine with it. Not sure what he does now but am guessing he can make a decent salary at shows if he likes. Feller too to go back to our original pitcher vs pitcher comparison. I have also heard Joe D was a super pain in the behind, I don't think he ever got over being Mr. Marilyn Monroe to be honest and then to get dumped for the President was a blow to him as well, imagine he was pretty bitter. Hey Phoggy and all, nice to see Khep too |

I bought a first edition of Shoeless Joe (the book the movie Field of Dreams was made from) and that was $50. Books can be pretty pricey, a first edition of Game of Thrones is going for around $250.
Enjoy your bossless day Catfish. |

hawk-the thing is i thought this shoeless book was new, hench the insane prices on ebay. it's not. its from 1951. and field of dreams is sappy for me. and timothy busfield ruins the movie for me too. he shoullld've stayed with the nerds at Adams College. haha. hawk-the author of your book is ray kinsella - the character of kevin costner. |

I bought mad fireworks this year for the 4th. I got 3" mortars, 1/4 sticks, firecrackers, roman candles, and a huge finale box that's called "The end of the world." .....cant wait to light evil lookin contraption. What if the world really did end after I lit it? ......that would be bogus. My buddy bought a 10" mortar, but we're clueless to how we're going to launch it ....maybe out of a bucket ...I dunno. Regardless, when that thing goes off, it will be epic. Its going to be like the Normandy Invasion .....I just hope NATO doesn't show up.

You're welcome Cat...........I love the lore and history of baseball and about 1 out of every 5 books I read is on the subject.
For me it will always be America's pasttime because a ton of our history, starting from the late 19th century, took places after Abner's game was born. |

yam--bad news...they now have proof that they were playing baseball 40+ yrs ahead of doubleday. cooperstown has their own doubleday field, but are stuck with the name as they didn't do the proper research for the foundings of the game.
yam - part II - did you know the book was this old? i was paging through it and saw a ton of cobb in it and he's my favorite, so i look forward to reading it. im not a reader but have a bio on ruth that is brutal to get through as it's written like did he or did he not do these things. same author about williams. a new book about cooperstown confidential-a tell all about hte hall of fame. a novel about a kid who pitches with both arms and the father trying to exploit him and a murder mystery about our nations first serial killer dr. mudd. which is now being made into a movie by leonardo dicaprio. heard the book is great so I HAVE A TON OF READING TO DO. thanks fizzle--celebrate our indepedence well my friend and please be safe. i always see on the news someone tired or their house burnt down as the fireworks went off accidentially or caught fire inside etc. be safe and drink up. haha |

I actually read that but like the ring of "Abner's game". I've read that the game has original roots well before the civil war. The older the better IMO. yam - part II - did you know the book was this old? i was paging through it and saw a ton of cobb in it and he's my favorite, so i look forward to reading it. im not a reader but have a bio on ruth that is brutal to get through as it's written like did he or did he not do these things. same author about williams. a new book about cooperstown confidential-a tell all about hte hall of fame. a novel about a kid who pitches with both arms and the father trying to exploit him and a murder mystery about our nations first serial killer dr. mudd. which is now being made into a movie by leonardo dicaprio. heard the book is great so I HAVE A TON OF READING TO DO. Before I moved to Scottsdale a couple of years ago I could see the fireworks displays from about 4 municiple areas from the deck of my home in the foothils of the east valley. |

yam-IM OFFICIAL A MORON! the book wasnt written in 1955...that's when the author was born! the book was written in 2001 as the forward by the author says february 2001. so it's 11 yrs old and probably out of print, so that's why the ones on ebay are $40.00 and over. wow. sorry pal for the bad info.
i will say the book smells musty for only being 11 yrs old. haha. |
