It wasn't a secret a season ago the Browns right-side of the offensive line struggled. In wasting little time at the Combine on Thursday, the Browns converged on Ohio State tackle Mike Adams.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The first official “affect the Browns” Scouting Combine tidbit was dropped at about 1350 hours in Indiana on Thursday.

That’s when Ohio State tackle Mike Adams said that the Cleveland Browns were one of two teams that had talked to him about playing right tackle in the pros, the other being the Washington Redskins.

Of those two teams, only one has two first-round picks -- and that’s the Browns, who are sitting at the 22nd spot with their second first-round choice. Which is right in the area where folks project Adams to be selected. Adams played left tackle for the Buckeyes, but he’d switch sides without hesitation if Cleveland -- or any team -- asked him to move.

“I’m open to do whatever a team needs me to do,” Adams said.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur emphasized the Browns are still gathering information about all draftable players.

“I’m looking forward to digging into some tape on him,” Shurmur said of Adams. “I haven’t seen as much of him as I have some of the other skill players.”

Adams certainly fits the NFL size requirement. He measured in at 6-foot-7 and 320 pounds, ideal for a tackle. And he said one of his strengths is athleticism and “blocking in space.” Which could translate well to NFL pass blocking.

“As an offensive lineman in the NFL, pass protection, I guess, is where you make your money,” Adams said.

But the predraft scuttlebutt on Adams is mixed. He had what he called “bumps in the road” early in his career. Those bumps included being caught committing NCAA violations in the tattoo issue at Ohio State. He was suspended the first five games of his senior season, which in itself might make teams pause.

But Adams also was suspended two games in 2009 for violating team rules, then had misdemeanor drug paraphernalia charges filed after he ran a stop sign. Those charges, though, were dropped.

“I’ve let those things build my character rather than break it down,” Adams said without going into detail on any one incident. “I think that my character is something that all the coaches at Ohio State have vouched for. Anybody who knows me knows I’m not a bad guy. “

Adams has tried to make the most of the pre-draft segment of the calendar. Folks said he had a “good week” at the Senior Bowl. If he impresses this week at the Combine teams will keep thinking better of him.

“He really helped himself at the Senior Bowl,” said NFL.com analyst Mike Mayock in a recent conference call. “I think he will continue to help himself at the combine. Most people had second round grades on him, but he's moving up.”

A player with a second-round grade taken in the first round might sound an alarm. But Adams played the premium position of left tackle, and he played in a major conference against serious competition.

“Hopefully the teams will look at that,” he said.

He’s looked to Orlando Pace as an on-field example, and he’s tried to study NFL guys like Jake Long and Joe Thomas.

He freely admits, though, that he can improve in pass protection.

“Getting my hands too wide at times and oversetting is definitely something I have to work on,” he said.

There is some thinking that that admission is a red flag that Adams has developed bad habits, and that it will be hard for him to improve because he’s not developed consistent practice and work habits.

Adams merely said that pass protection is “something I’ll keep striving to get better at.”

“It’s just a blessing to be in this position,” Adams said. “If my name is called in the first round I can’t even explain how that would feel.”

Listening to Ross Tucker on Sirius NFL tonight.  All a flutter on RGIII all the time..  Yes, Luck played in a pro offense, yes, Luck can make all the throws and play from under center, yes and yes..    But, yes RGIII played in the spread offense and didn't play from under center, BUT he is very smart and can learn all those types of things.  But there are lots of things that RGIII can do that Andrew Luck will NEVER be able to do.

The Redskins are drooling over RGIII and are trying to package their picks but feeling is St. Louis does not want to move ALL the way down to 6...

Just say no to Matt Flynn.  If you want Matt Flynn just stick with Colt for a couple more years.  Just say no to Matt Flynn...

Pundits questioning Robert Griffin III's smarts must not realize he graduated early from Baylor. (US Presswire)

INDIANAPOLIS -- Robert Griffin III had his height and weight taken this week at the combine. He officially stands at 6-feet-2 3/8 inches. That is about three-eighths of an inch taller than expected. Since the NFL and the people who cover the sport are full of dorks and geeks who wear Captain Kirk pajamas, this was considered big news.

It's amazing, actually. Guy stands maybe an inch taller than expected and suddenly he's Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. But that's where we are with Griffin. He's such a spectacular quarterback specimen that any piece of news involving him, no matter how trivial, nerdy or silly, leads to a breaking news headline.

Some of that is understandable. No player now -- not even Andrew Luck -- is generating as much interest around the sport as Griffin. He will make this draft one of the most interesting to watch in recent history because of the full-frontal assault teams will make in the upcoming draft to trade up and get RG3.

League sources maintain at least three teams are strongly considering moving up in a blockbuster deal with the Rams to snag Griffin. Those teams, sources say, include Washington, Miami and Seattle. Team officials also say Cleveland has interest in trading up, though not as much as other teams.

It will likely take two No. 1 picks (at least) to make that trade, and the reason is some teams view Griffin as similarly talented as Luck or such a close facsimile in terms of potential that the difference isn't a great one.

The Redskins remain the front-runners. Their serious interest was inadvertently confirmed by big-mouth assistant coach Jim Haslett, who spoke to a fan about the team's serious interest in Griffin not knowing that the fan penned a Redskins blog.

Haslett only confirmed the obvious. Everyone in football expected Washington to make a play for Griffin before Haslett spilled the beans and nothing has changed. It's the kind of move impetuous owner Dan Snyder would make, except this Snyder move would actually be a smart one. Griffin going to Washington would energize a frustrated fan base.

The Dolphins are also interested in trading up despite their Matt Flynn infatuation. Team officials believe the sleeper team is Seattle, though moving from the 12 spot to No. 2 would cost a great deal.

There are two things we definitely know when it comes to the Rams and RG3. One is that St. Louis won't trade Sam Bradford, as coach Jeff Fisher explained Friday. He could be fibbing, but it's highly unlikely they would make such a move. We also know it's highly unlikely the Rams draft Griffin unless their intent is to immediately trade him (which won't happen either). This just leaves the option of trading out of the spot.

"There's a lot of options," Fisher said. "We'll be prepared."

Griffin is worth the risk of giving up so many draft choices. His smarts, strong arm and athleticism make him a practically can't-miss prospect.

And yes, I said his smarts, despite some analysis to the contrary. Though draft analyst Mike Mayock has said extremely positive things about Griffin, he also launched the annual trial balloon about the intelligence of melanin-blessed quarterback prospects. Mayock was asked how he thought Griffin would do in the private sessions with teams at the combine, where prospects break down game tape and diagram plays. Mayock's response, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram: "I don't know how he'll do in that setting."

With his non-answer, Mayock raises a question that doesn't deserve to be raised. And ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay told the newspaper in the same article: "I'd be surprised if he doesn't floor teams with his intelligence."

Mayock's comments are similar to what is whispered and sometimes said outright about many black quarterback prospects. The same things were stated, in fact, by some about Cam Newton last season. Newton turned out to be, well, kinda brilliant.

Indeed, scouts have maintained to me there is no indication Griffin lacks the intellect to play the position. In fact, they say the opposite, pointing to the fact that Griffin graduated early from both high school and college. At Baylor, he earned a degree in political science and was an Academic All-American. He's the definition of a smart guy.

Most of the NFL knows this and if they don't they'll find out this week and when some team -- likely the Redskins -- trades up in the draft to get Griffin they'll see better than anyone.

LOTS of things? OK, I'll bite.
What, besides the possibility of breaking off a 90 yard run, can RGIII do the Luck will NEVER be able to do?

I can't wait to see this list. This should be good.

You ain't gonna get him.  Forgetaboutit...

But you could have RGIII...   How will you feel if the Browns "pass" on him?  Which I think they will.  The Redskins will offer the Lambs a fortune for the #2 pick and we will be left holding an old bag again.  Probably draft that old kid out of Ok St. - or sign Jason Campbell..

or both, and then what are you left with?  NOTHING - still, or again...  NOTHING.

Many questioned the Panthers taking Cam Newton last year, how did that work out?  You would'nt want a Cam Newton on your team?

Last April, the Falcons shook up the draft board by jumping from No. 27 to No. 6, picking former Alabama receiver Julio Jones.

The Falcons gave up a lot to make the move, investing the 27th pick, a first-round pick in 2012 (No. 22 overall), a second-round pick in 2011, a fourth-round pick in 2011, and a fourth-round pick in 2012.

A year later, the Falcons don’t pick until No. 55, and they could use a first-rounder to replace the guy who currently wears No. 55 for the Falcons, defensive end John Abraham.  Still, G.M. Thomas Dimitroff has no regrets.

“It’s something that I’ve said from the very beginning, our move and our desire to have Julio Jones on our team was something that we feel very, very comfortable with,” Dimitroff told reporters at the Scouting Combine.  “We accomplished, in our minds, becoming more explosive.  We also believe that we need to continue to grow as an offense and we will never look back on our move as being one that was overly expensive.  It was something that we deemed was right for the organization at the time.  Again, Julio was brought into our organization not for the here and now only, but for the future of the franchise.”

Jones definitely made an impact on the team in 2011, despite missing three games with a hamstring injury.  And he could end up being one of the very best receivers in the league, as soon as 2012.

Regardless, Jones will always be compared to the players who were obtained by the Browns with the picks the Falcons surrendered, which include for now defensive lineman Phil Taylor (via a trade up with the Chiefs), receiver Greg Little, and running back Owen Marecic.  Jones also will be compared to receiver Jonathan Baldwin, who was picked by the Chiefs in the slot the Falcons originally held last season.

I wouldn't be heart boke.  The Browns have an opportunity to surround McCoy w/ some great Talent at WR, RT and RB elswhere in the drraft without sacrificing other areas of need on the roster.  And the Browns W-L record will still improve significantly.
