Ankiel to sign with Kansas City

Seven seasons and a couple of positions into his major-league career, Rick Ankiel, the former pitcher turned outfielder, has crossed Missouri and will play for Kansas City in 2010, CBSSports.com has learned.

Ankiel and the Royals have agreed to terms on a one-year deal worth $3.25 million, according to sources, with a mutual option for 2011 worth $6 million.

Ankiel batted just .231 with 11 homers and 38 RBIs in 122 games with St. Louis last season. He started his career in St. Louis as a pitcher in 1999 before inexplicably losing his control and converting into an outfielder. He debuted as an outfielder in the majors in 2007.

I really like this kid. He obviously is a very good athlete to go from pitcher to outfield slugger like he did. I just can't help but think his problems are completely mental as opposed to some physical malady. Players just don't go south that fast without a major injury. I hope KC has some sports psychology guru that can straighten him out. I'm a Boston fan but I really feel for KC fans and hope they can get something to cheer about at Kaufman this year (except when the Sox are in town).

Yeah, and it sounds like you really know how to spell and write coherent english sentences. It's ok, cardinals fan. You're just a simple guy with a 4th grade education and a deep love for a team that loses in the first round of the playoffs every year now. Btw your world series win in '06 was bulls***. The tigers were a way better team and your garbage team got lucky. Jackass.

This is a good pickup for KC! Ankiel was having a good season last year until he had a violant crash with the wall...I din't think he was ever healthy after that! Good Luck In KC Rick!!

Pulling for "Rick the Natural" in KC

I would love to see Rick Ankiel be THE STORY of baseball in 2010.
As a Cardinal fan, I am proud of the way the organization did not toss him aside.
His throws from the outfield are amongst, if not the best, ever.
KC may have gotten a steal, even at a price tag that shocked me.  We shall see.
KC fans rejoice:
In 2008, he offensive stats were great.
In 2009, who knows what happens if he doesn't crash into the wall (and a sports hernia, if I remember right).
The guy has been in the Bigs as a position player for only 1.5 years.
Rick has the skills to go .280, 30, 100.  So $3.5 million would be fine.  Way to go Boras.
Plus he will draw fans and cover the outfield like few can.
I'll keep an eye on KC on SportsCenter.
Could be the Fantasy Baseball sleeper of the year.
Just fix the "down and in" hole against lefties, Rick.

Your kidding me 3 million and 6 next year. Thats whats wrong with baseball, KC will never win getting has beens for too much. As a Pirate fan we did that before and it never works BURNITz 5 mill or whatever he played a month I think. This guy can't hit enough and you trade Teahen who's young and watch he will explode this year, and you will see what I'm saying. I hope you pick up his option now haha after 240/9/40 this year, heck give him 8 mill next year haha Stupid

Wow, what a douche, so you think Zack Grienke isn't any good, and the fans do nothing but whine, and no one goes to the games.
For your information IDIOT, Grienke was the best pitcher in baseball last year, our attendance is surprisingly strong for having lost for so many years, and we bitch because many of us can remember the years we were a dominant force in baseball, and considered the model franchise in professional sports. You probably don't know any of that because you are obviously a fan of only one team and watch a little sports center from time to time. Watching baseball highlights does not make you an expert. Do a little research first or just stick to posting about your own team.

Royals fans should be happy that KC has finally replaced Coco Crisp with another good name in Rick Ankiel. Although Kansas City never makes the huge upgrade, signing Ankiel is actually a pleasant surprise in that they have someone who can hit homers out of Kauffman Stadium. The Royals moving Ankiel to pitcher is a horrible decision because one, he hasn't been a pitcher since 2006. Two, Ankiel has the legendary outfielder's arm and the fact that he may be the best outfielder in terms of defense in the American league. And three, the Royals have Zack Greinke and Luke Hovechar, which seem to be the Royals future for years to come. They could draft someone similar to how they got these two guys and fill the spot. The Royals making Ankiel a pitcher would only take up another spot that a young prospect could have filled in, so bad decision if the Royals want to get better with young talent on the pitching staff, similar to the forementioned Zack Greinke and Luke Hovechar. Anyways, good signing by the Royals since now, they have two good outfielders in David Dejesus and Rick Ankiel.
