Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

Posted on: February 3, 2012 1:03 pm

This statement from Ohio State AD Gene Smith was released by the school early afternoon on Friday:

"I am disappointed that negative references have been made about our football coaches and particularly head coach Urban Meyer regarding recruiting. In our league appropriate protocol, if you have concerns, is to share those concerns with your athletic director. Then your athletic director will make the determination on the appropriate communications from that point forward. The athletic directors in our league are professionals and communicate with each other extremely well. Urban Meyer and his staff have had a compliance conscience since they’ve arrived."

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

Hey 1012...
Smith is there because the Boosters and the Trusties want him there. They are not looking at what hes done, if anything else happens, they have their built in fall guy to blame. Its about winning games, not about the honor among B1G coaches.
I don't see anything wrong with Meyer's recruiting. Commitments mean nothing, to most of these kids. Tell them what they want to here, and most of the time their yours. Remember the schollies are for 4yrs now. If a kid doesn't work out, he still has a free ride, and Meyer hasen't had to deal with this before.

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

Has Gene Smith not learned from his past remarks, it is in the best interest of the University and Gene Smith to not issue any public statements. He is lucky to still have a job, and I find it hilarious that Coach Meyer was the biggest critic of the Buckeyes, but compromised his morals for the mighty buck. Coach Meyers legacy will forever be tied to two NFL starting QBS, this season will give him the chance to build his only legacy. After winning one championship Alabama made a statue in Coach Saban's honor, last I check despite winning two championship the statute outside the stadium honors Tebow not Coach Meyer. That says alot, I gues UF knows who really lead them to two championships and it wasnt the new coach of Ohio State

"The athletic directors in our league are professionals".  What did he say?  He must be talking about the other AD's in the league.  How does this guy still have a job?  Didn't he lie to the NCAA several times during the Tressel investigation?  Really, how did this guy survive that mess?

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

I can appreciate all of the OSU bashing going on in this thread, but what did OSU do wrong this time?

Two coaches come out and say that Urban Meyer is unethical (Mark Dantonio) and acting illegally (Bret Bielema) because athletes that verbally committed to there schools BEFORE Meyer was hired at OSU flipped and signed with OSU. In front of reporters (with tape recorders) Bielema stated that he was going to the proper authorities with evidence of these illegal activities. The problem is, the actions weren't illegal and there is no evidence. He and Dantonio were posturing for his alumi associations to explain why they lost key recruits to OSU.

Look at Gunner Kiel who committed to Indiana, took it back and then when it looked like he was going to LSU and he signed with Notre Dame.

Look at how many players flip within and to the SEC. Meyer is doing what has worked and is widely and openly practiced in NCAA sports - not just football.

I don't understand how this is just one more example of OSU cheating?

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

Mr. Smith, I have to chuckle at your sudden desire to take the high road and your comment about "compliance conscience."  Sir, there is no one in the Big 10 and probably all of college football with less credibility than you.  How you continue to hold a job given the fact that you repeatedly looked the other way as the prople you supervised violated the rules repeatedly is certainly a question mark and reveals that at Ohio State University doing what is right is secondary to winning at all costs.

Please, sir, refrain from issuing such blatantly hypocritical statements.  Everyone is laughing, except perhaps those in your campus community who continue to believe that you and your athletic department are the true victims.

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

The University turned themselves in and penalized themsevles upon knowledge of minor infractions that were blown out of proportion due to Tressell trying to fix the problems in house.
Yep, by claiming no knowledge of the events a full year after he emailed about it to a third party. That's taking care of it in house. This is not to say that I take any issue with talking to or even signing a recruit after a verbal commit. Nothing is done until it is signed. Just pointing out the error listed. The University did attempt a slap on the wrist and even the vest tried to placate the NCAA. Mainly in the hopes that nobody would find out that he did have knowledge of what was going on and tried to shuffel it under the rug. Smith turned a blind eye to that as well.

Gene Smith statement re: Urban Meyer

Remember when the University president said--"I hope he doesn't fire me" referencing the old coach.  Now we have the AD saying about the same thing by saying it is ok with me and if you have any complaints see me and I and the other ADs in the conference will cover it up.

Let us be  serious--This is big time college football==Can you imagine a coach in the NFL or even MLB running to his owner for cover?

beer is great
