Petrino not seeing No. 1 recruit Thursday

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino will not be making an in-person visit Thursday to the nation’s No. 1 recruit according to the player’s coach.

“A situation occurred,” Springfield (Mo.) Hillcrest coach John Beckham told

Beckham said that Petrino and Hillcrest receiver Dorial Green-Beckham “bumped into each other” earlier this month in San Antonio, Texas possibly creating an NCAA recruiting issue. Petrino was in town for the American Football Coaches Association convention. Green-Beckham was there for the U.S. Army All-Star Game.

Arkansas issued a statement Wednesday saying no NCAA violation occured.

“When he was at the coaching convention in San Antonio, they bumped into each other,” said Beckham who also is Green-Beckham’s foster father. “It just so happened that another school that was recruiting Dorial happened to be there that day.”

This NCAA bylaw may apply:

In football, one contact per prospective student-athlete is permitted during each week of the contact period as specified in Bylaw 13.17.4 either at the prospective student-athlete's educational institution or any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home). A visit to the prospective student-athlete's educational institution and any other location (e.g., prospective student-athlete's home) during the same calendar day shall be considered one contact.

The Army all-star game was Jan. 6. The AFCA convention was Jan. 8-11. There were NCAA recruiting "quiet" and "dead" periods during some of those dates. During those times no in-person contact is allowed with recruits by coaches. Beckham added that Arkansas will send other coaches on Thursday.

Arkansas' statement: "No violation has occured and we are taking proactive steps we feel necessary to avoid any risk of one."

As days dwindle toward signing day on Feb. 1, the rush to get Green-Beckham’s name on a national letter of intent has intensified. The 6-foot, 6-inch, 225-pound receiver has narrowed his list of finalists to Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Alabama. He is listed as having the most Twitter followers among the nation’s top 100 recruits

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops and assistant Jay Norvell visited the school on Monday. Texas coach Mack Brown is expected to visit on Wednesday. Green-Beckham made an Arkansas visit last week with his foster  brother Kingsley Ehie. Missouri coach Gary Pinkel flew in by helicopter to speak to the prospect last week. Green-Beckham's list of finalists are Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Missouri.

Recruiting analysts are hanging on every nugget of information regarding the national single-season leader in receiving yards. predicted Monday that the receiver would be heading to Arkansas. analyst Steve Spiewak says he can’t understand the perception that Arkansas is in the lead. Green-Beckham says he is undecided and will make his decision known next Wednesday morning at the school.

“People really read in too much to what he says,” Beckham said. “They interviewed [Dorial] last week before a basketball tournament in St. Louis. And he said … ‘I have to go to Missouri next week.’ They all got hung up on, ‘I have to,’ instead of ‘wanting to go.’ That’s just a little example.”

Guess that's why you know?

If you were in the group, then you're sworn to secrecy as well, which means that you are not qualified to be in the group since you told everyone.

If you were not in the group, then you have no way of knowing, which means that you're a liar.  Either way, the only secret here is where Dorial will play college football.

Obviously, the Missouri QB is a running QB, which I can understand since he gets a one pick for every two TDs.  Only that means is that Arkansas running backs actually do the running.  That is why it's a Prostyle Offense.  When a QB rushes in an offensive system, it is simply a college offense, typically a spread offense.

In college, sacks go against the rush yards.  In the NFL, sacks go against the pass yards.

Also, Franklin was rated the #4 dual threat QB, not the #4 overall QB.
Wilson was the #9 pro-style QB, not the #9 overall QB.

Arkansas went 11-2 with losses to Alabama and LSU, both of which played in the National Championship game. Both of the losses came on the road. Arkansas beat four Top 15 teams.

Missouri went 8-5 with losses to Arizona St, Oklahoma, K-State, Oklahoma St, and Baylor.  4 of 5 losses came on the road.  Missouri beat no Top 15 team.

It will be interesting to see how well Missouri fares in the SEC.  At least you got the SEC East, because the SEC West is the BCS Best!

Man Up, Dodd. Respond to hogdb calling you out.

Amen redhog.

I don't know what the real story is, but I know who writes for hogdb and he usually does his homework.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI Grad. I have no grudge against Mizzou here, but I didn't see the disclosure in the story. There is a good case to be made here for violation by Missouri via Dodd.

Here's the link again......

I want to see Dodd respond to these charges.

Here is the link again b/c I don't want it to be easy for him to slide on this.

I'm confused...

All of these Twitter followers raise a question.  If DGB creates a website with adsense, Amazon, and a couple of affiliate products on it, and uses his Twitter account to drive traffic to his website, is he committing an NCAA violation?

Sadly, I'm pretty sure we all know the answer to that one.  Any other college or high school student with 8,000 Twitter followers would be able to monetize them any way he or she saw fit, but an athlete is committing a violation if he does so.  The NCAA has gotten too greedy for their own good.  Some anti-trust litigation needs to be explored.

Then again, why bother?  After all, why should an athlete who pulls in millions of dollars for his school be allowed to monetize his own Twitter followers?  Athletes can get along without money.  Yeah, that's the ticket...

Wow, there are fans from both sides here that need to calm down. Just my opinion, but let me just say:

To my fellow Razorback fans:
1. Mizzou has a good football program. Many measure that, not by wins/losses, but by the number of players it sends to the NFL. Missouri has definitely done that. Moving to the SEC wil give them better national exposure and probably continue the trend (this last comment was in no way to say anything like the SEC is better than the Big10, but the fact is that the SEC gets more exposure on a national scale)
2. Franklin is a very good QB and runs a great offense.

To Missouri Fans:
1. The Cotton Bowl was a nice victory. It was 4 years ago and I can't speak for Missouri, but the current Arkansas team has zero resemblance of the team that was beaten down in the Cotton Bowl, again, 4 years ago.
2. Tyler Wilson is a very good QB and runs a great offense.

Both programs are heading in the right direction. I will say, not that the recent Razorback teams have won a Naional Championship or even an SEC championship, that is a fun and exciting time to be a Razorback fan. They definitely have the tools to compete and win and are on the upswing.

I like the banter between fans and wish that Arkansas and Mizzou play more than the current setup.

@ "pancho"

Ok, gonna start calling you PAMcho since you act like a mouthy little 12 yr old girl.

Here's some FACTS for you:

-University of Arkansas > university of mizzew
-mizzpoo has NEVER won a Nat'l Championship in football, Hogs have
-on noone's list of top25 programs in history does misery have a spot
-you guys beat a poor Ark team in the Cotton Bowl and it was a SuperBowl for you guys
-miz`zoo's winning % and other %'s in history are much lower than Arkansas'
-your hatred, delusion, classlessness and immaturity are FACTS

Wherever DGB signs(even if not with Arkansas), Hog fans will wish him well;  on the flip-side, people like you, PAMcho, will curse him and act like a fool and wish the worst for him because he didn't sign with your team.

Grow up and quit crying about Arkansas being no good when they are better than mizzfoo over the years.
Also, go get medical attention for your mental illness(es).

BTW, does anyone know why Dodds does not have a Gender next to his name and Bio? Judging from his picture he is a prick and his writing fits the way he looks to a T.  Anderson dumping Mizzou to come Hog Heaven is also a part of the hatin going on of the Mizzou foks. Some guy place stats comparing the Mizzou QB against T. Wilson.  Wilson does not run he is QB in a NFL system.  He throws to big time NFL like WRs i.e. DGB.  U folks need to man up and quit trying to trash Arkansas. OK to love your school but no need to belittle others.  I want Mizzou to do well, but I wish the hatin would stop.
