Bellotti's name surfaces at Arizona

EUGENE, Ore. – Former Oregon coach Mike Bellotti’s name has surfaced in the Arizona search.

TucsonCitizen.com reported Friday that “things could move very quickly” between the school and the 60-year-old now analyst for ESPN.  It has long been known that Bellotti wanted to get back into coaching at some point. He stepped down here after 14 seasons in 2009.

“Mike wants to get back into coaching,” one source close to Bellotti told CBSSports.com on Saturday. “Mike’s anxious.”

Arizona was the first major job to open up this season after Mike Stoops was fired Oct. 10. Arizona AD Greg Byrne already has one major hire on his resume. He was responsible for bringing Dan Mullen to Mississippi State while AD at that school.

Bellotti may have his pick of jobs in the Pac-12 if Arizona State and/or UCLA open up as well.

Bellotti's name surfaces at Arizona

Bellotti does not like cold weather.
The job only pays $600K and there is NOTHING to do in Pullman.  That is why they have had problems before.  Recruiting to Pullman is challenging.   That is why they are going to alternate playing OS and Oregon in Seattle.
IF he takes a job soon, I think he would prefer Arizona or UCLA over WSU.
P. S. I like WSU....it is just way out in the middle of nowhere.

It seemed obvious to many of us that when Bellotti stepped down at Oregon he wasn't done coaching yet.  For whatever reason the Ducks wanted to make a change and it seems to have worked well for them, but in the not so distant future they'll have to deal with an old friend.  Bellotti it would seem will stay in the Pac 12 when he comes back because that's the area where all his recruiting ties have been which in college sports is critical.  This would be the optimal year as a number of jobs in that conference seem to be open or soon to come open and he'll be able to pick and choose.

Let's also not forget that Bellotti's big rival for YEARS has been Washington, Oregon State can claim they have a bigger rivalry with the Ducks but the Ducks/Huskies is much bigger!
He would eb able to keep that rivalry with the Huskies by taking over at Wazzu which he would relish!

Bellotti's name surfaces at Arizona

Bellotti will be the next head coach at Washington State.
Paul Wulff has been a disaster, Bellotti is close with Wazzu Ad Bill Moos, his non compete is up, Moos knows Bellotti will bring in donors and even more loyalty and season ticket sales from a fan base that's already one of the most loyal in football.
Plus Bellotti knows the Pac 12, knows the recruiting hot spots and with easy academic standards he should be able to bring in some kids that may not get into other Pac 12 schools and he may be able to get some juco kids in too.
Arizona is beautiful and warm but do NOT be surprised when he ends up taking over Wazzu.

The only thing to remember, is that Bellotti won't have Phil Knight money to back the Arizona program!!!

The Arizona franchise is somewhat like the Chicago Cubs-laughable losers. Arizona needs a coach who can recruit nation wide and not just stuck into one demographic area. Picking up a coach like Miller who can pick up kids from the east coast would be step number one in the re building process.

If that was true Duck boy Mike Bellotti would not be going back and forth to Tucson and it come from you guys just a few weeks ago that Bellotti will be the next Arizona HC and with this new news he looks like he will be the next Wildcats coach. I have to say also that Bellotti would be a great hire for UA because the man can build a good program like he did at Oregon where that poor school was the worst football school for decades before he take over the lowly Ducks and he can do the same for Arizona to.

Mike Bellotti would pick UCLA over Arizona.  He still has ties to California and would love to recruit and beat USC.
