Notre Dame to Big 12 (in all but fb) makes sense

Notre Dame to the Big 12?

Don’t blow your Dome. We’re talking basketball and the second-tier sports, all the stuff that needs a home if the Big East blows up. Makes sense for ND. The Big East is unstable. The Big 12 is willing to try anything to solidify itself. In fact, Texas AD DeLoss Dodds offered a Notre Dame spot in the league to park its non-football sports. That was before the 2010 season and the tongue-in-cheek “offer” fizzled almost the moment it left Dodds’ mouth.

Now the stakes are higher. With the Big East’s future uncertain, the Irish may need a new home for non-football sports. There are rumblings that the Big 12-Notre Dame talk has started again. It has caught the attention of at least one Big 12 writer.

The detailed document regarding the SEC given to Missouri’s board of curators and obtained by the AP earlier this month included Notre Dame among future Big 12 expansion candidates.

It is known that the Irish desperately want to stay independent in football, but might face a decision with its other sports. Playing in the far-flung (for Notre Dame) Big 12 could be a logistical problem (the closest Big 12 school would be Iowa State), but there aren’t many options left. ACC commissioner John Swofford quashed any Notre Dame speculation recently when he said his league is an “all-in, revenue-sharing conference.”

Notre Dame definitely isn’t into revenue sharing. Its football contract with NBC nets the school a reported $15 million per year. It also wants to start a school-centric network similar to the Longhorn Network. But if the Big 12 can live (barely) with the LHN, what’s another dedicated network between friends?

The attraction for the Big 12 would be to have a relationship if and when the Irish decide to join a conference in football. The product on the field isn’t helping that solidify that independence. The Irish were all but eliminated from BCS consideration after Saturday’s lost to USC. In his two seasons at the school, Kelly is a mediocre 12-8.  Charlie Weis’ two BCS bowl seasons are starting to look pretty good.

The disadvantage would be flying over several states to play in Oklahoma and Texas. But, again, what options does Notre Dame have? A minor sports alliance with the Big Ten makes total sense but the NBC contract would almost certainly be a deal breaker. Like the ACC, the Big Ten shares its revenue equally and is just starting to realize the profitability of the Big Ten Network.

Notre Dame to Big 12 (in all but fb) makes sense

Dennis, the approach with Notre Dame to the BIG12 to have a relationship with all sports except football, and hopefully someday ND would join the BIG12 in all sports, is nothing but "smoke and mirrors".  This is the very same approach and mindset the BIG EAST used back in the early 90's by allowing ND to do the same thing, and you see what has happened.  Notre Dame has done more to harm BIG EAST football as much as anything else. It is fine for Notre Dame to be independent in football, but they need to do their other sports including basketball in a league like the A10, who doesn't have a football division. That would be ND decision to make, or join a BCS Conference for ALL Sports. In reality in this DAY and TIME things have changed greatly relating to TV exposure, and Notre Dame should not be allowed to be half-way in a BCS Conference, because it is not fair to all the other members. Kudos to the SEC, ACC, PAC12 and B1G for not allowing this to happen in their leagues, ALL Members are ALL IN !!!!

It makes no sense. Let ND do their thing in the Big East or the Big 10.More power to them. I'd rather have Louisville, who has a much better BB history than ND.

setmetheball...that may be the smartest comment I've seen about ND athletics in regards to the Big East. In fact, if the remaining football schools were to leave and form a new football conference, then the remaining basketball schools would still be there for ND in basketball and other olympic sports. Very astute observation.

Notre Dame to Big 12 (in all but fb) makes sense

Who is really saying the Big East is unstable in anything but football.    All the Catholic Universities are there in every sport but football so in someways if football dies off there still is a really good conference for Notre Dame.

They can barely sustain their current mediocre to supbar standard of play with their hand-picked schedule

that is correct....the schedule they play is really pretty mediocre at best and even then they don't win

Notre Dame to Big 12 (in all but fb) makes sense

Why would NBC pay for exclusive rights to NDs home football games?  Because a LOT of people tune in EVERY week to watch ND football, regardless of how good or bad they are

actually the ratings for Notre Dame football on NBC are pretty anemic unless they are playing a top notch program ...which they do less and less. So your point just isn't true

One interesting possibilty, unlikely but intriguing, would be for the Big 12 to pair Notre Dame and Boise State. The Broncos could be a football only school, while the Irish could join in every sport except football. Together they add up to a full member for the conference. The Big 12 could invite them in with an all-sports school--say, Louisville or BYU--and become a 12-member conference made up of 13 schools. It could work.

Wrong again, Dodd.  If Notre Dame is serious about its football program, the Big 12 is a great match.  They definitely need to get out of the pretend-for-the-sake-of-the-NCAA basketall-tournament conference, otherwise known as the Big East.

Wrong again Dodd. They belong in the Big 10 like the other Indiana schools. They are no better than the top 2-3 teams that the Big 10 has yearly. NBC and the BCS will figure it out soon enough. Let the Irish starve like the other Independant schools or schools in non BCS conferences.  Their recruiting is in the lower half of the top 25 and that's where they will finish every year if they are lucky. The top recruit in the country is from Indiana and he committed to the Hoosiers or did until the $$$$ started flowing.
