Boone Pickens speaks on state of Big 12

Boone Pickens says he believes the Big 12 will stay together.

I talked to him late Wednesday morning, asking him a serious of questions about the future of his program and the conference. If you need to be reminded, Pickens is the billionaire booster who has gotten Oklahoma State to the brink of the national conversation.

The Cowboys are coming off their best season, 11-2 in 2010. On Saturday at Texas A&M, they play only the ninth Big 12 conference game between two top 10 teams (not including the Red River Shootout). It might be the last game between the two schools as conference rivals.

"I still have great hope that the Aggies stay with the Big 12," Pickens told me.

If A&M goes to the SEC, do you think the Big 12 can be held to together?

"They've already told you [Oklahoma, Texas] they don't want you in the Pac-12. I don't want them either. I don't want to be in the division of the Pac-12 that doesn't have the ocean.

"I think we just work through it. If the Aggies are gone, we add somebody. I'd add TCU to go forward."

Lost in all this is your team is playing pretty well, the Big 12 is 23-2 in non-conference games, there's a big game in College Station on Saturday. Do you miss talking about football and bragging on your team right now?

"We've got a good football team. We haven't had a tough game yet. We'll see Saturday. We're no different than we've always been. We don't want to get anybody hurt."

How proud are you of what you and Oklahoma State have been able to accomplish?

"This is our sixth year since we've started with this program. Every year has been a better year. I hope this year will be better than last year. I’m not going to get out on a limb because, why? I saw OU play the other night against Florida State. I can see why they're ranked No. 1."

Do you think this decision by the Pac-12 last night keeps the Big 12 together in some form?

"May very well. I hope so."

I'm sure you've considered the culture change of OU and Oklahoma State going West.

"I lot of Oklahoma people went to California in the Dust Bowl during World War II to look for work. We're where we should be. This is home and I want to stay at home."

Do you consider this Pac-12 situation finished?

"I don't know. This thing is so fluid. In the morning I may pick up the paper and read something the opposite. I know what I think is best. I've thought through it. I'm objective. I know what I’m talking about. The Big 12 should stay together but it should be an equal conference."

I know you've had discussions with Texas. If they gave just a little bit back in terms of revenue would that be enough?

"I'm not too big on compromise. I'm more about doing what's right. What's right is everybody is treated equal. When it came time for you to vote they didn't say, 'We'll give you half a vote,' when you're 18 years old voting in an election. That's not the way it is. You're either in or you're not in. I want to be on the same basis as everybody else."

How does this league stay together with Oklahoma president David Boren taking shots at the conference going out the door on Monday, then on Tuesday saying it's in OU's best interests to stay in the Big 12?

"Oklahoma schools will stick together. David Boren is a smart guy. He's been around a long time. He's got a plan."

I have to agree this rich bitch seems to think he owns everything and that he even matters, he need to sit down and shut the hell up. This is the same guy that brought arena football to Okla St staduim. But I'm sure if Dan Beebe wasn't fired he would have something to stick in Boones mouth and keep him busy and quiet.

I agree that if you want to have your cake and eat it too, so to speak, you should go independent and do your own thing without conference restrictions.  I'm sure Texas has looked long and hard at independence as an option and don't see how it is better under their circumstances to do so.

Frankly, I'm not a proponent of the whole equal revenue-sharing deal that the Pac, SEC, and Big 10 are moving to.  Do people realize that equal revenue sharing is a new idea...USC, UCLA, Washinton, etc did not share "equally" before Larry Scott and his "New Deal" conference economics.  FDR had to look at the poverty and economic situations that existed around the Great Depression and use government regulated, social equity philosophies to take care of everybody because everyone was in SURVIVAL mode at that time.  In times of abundance (like CFB right now despite the US economic woes) how long will it be before USC, UCLA, Michigan, Oh St, Alabama, LSU, UF start looking across the table at their poor step-brothers before they say, "hey, why are we making as much as they do again?...oh, right it's for stability...but wait, isn't CFB a billion-dollar are we unstable again?....uh, look, if i bring more to the table, i should take more away from it".  This is how it will start...with the big dogs asking the above questions.

Social economics doesn't work unless all parties are equal and what they get is equal.  Well is USC equal to WSU...nope, and it won't be long before USC isn't ok with that.  It's the American way, "you get what you deserve", not "you get an equal piece of what the collective deserves".  That philosophy works when in economic crisis, but when thriving as CFB is today...look out, I hear the howling and barking already.

The BEST way to 'sabe' the Big-12 would have been to illegalize team-stealing by other greedy-shyster conferences.   The offenders should also be punished; ( the pompous quartet=  B-10, PAC, SEC, ACC)

Your trash-mouth degradations regarding the state of Texas are beneath commenting upon.

I agree that every school has the right to do whatever they want.  But, if you are part of a conference and trying to build up your conference you need to share equally.  I would be more angry at Texas for threatening to leave the conference last year and then making all the other teams feel blessed that Texas did not leave.  NOW, this year the rumors were they were going to leave again if the Pac 12 wanted them..which they did not.  The Pac 12 works great right now and the teams respect one another.  You don't hear these types of complaints against any single team inside of any other conference.  Texas just needs to go independent and then they will not be questioned about how greedy they are.

Is Notre Dame in a "dead pond"?  Is anyone in the group getting less than they were before?  Perhaps it's just time for change.

Does anybody really think that ANY school approached by ESPN with millions would say no?  This is America, people, EVERY school wants to bring in more revenue, so get over yourselves, already, you sound like nothing but sour grapes.  If schools decide because of the LHN they have to move, so be it, do what you gotta do, but it's not UT's problem or fault that they're more popular than you and hit the jackpot.

T Boone afraid of the SEC, PAC-12? Afraid EITHER USC buttcutting your buttboyz? Mr Pickens, T Boone, you spent your money, now you need to buy some wins. Invite Army, Navy, Air Force, Tulane, BYU, Houston and Tulsa.

Now the Big16 will have enough Creampuffs to get a cake walk to the BCS.  Out of confrence game with SEC competition like Vandy...Pac-12 lik Washington State, ACC like Duke.... Now you might get a TCU/ Boise model to BCS glory....

Oklahoma State is far ahead of Mizzou?  Have you won a Big XII Championship?  Have you played in a Big XII Championship?  Have you beaten Oklahoma recently?  Sounds more like a push to me.  Without your sugar daddy, you would be Iowa State with a few more wrestling trophies

Lest you be reminded, without YOUR sugar dday their would be no Paige Arena.  If you are suggesting we all take our sugar dadies and throw them in the river well let's meet there.  You bring the Walton family, we'll bring Boone, UT can bring____, Ohio State can.....  You see how ridiculous that is?

A Big 12 North Champion equates to an MIAA champion.  Welcome to to South paper tigger.  You will now get to experience how you can have a really talented team and still finish 4th or 5th.
