Texas A&M begins Big 12 divorce proceedings

Sometimes the spouse is the last to know.

As obvious as Texas A&M's shameless affair with the SEC has been, it was still a bit disconcerting to see it admitted in writing Thursday afternoon. A&M president R. Bowen Loftin officially notified the Big 12 that his school is "exploring our options."

If you need to be hit over the head, we'll go ahead and say it: A&M wants a divorce and marry into the SEC, but it wants to keep things civil. There are children involved -- eight of them if you don't count Texas which is an otherworldly mega-force

We've known for weeks that Aggies everywhere would rather change into formalwear, than stay in the Big 12. It's a University of Texas thing and you're not expected to understand it fully but a multi-million deal with ESPN to launch a network has something to do with it.

This starts the official process of A&M leaving its not-exactly-life partners in the Big 12. Now comes the potentially ugly legal part. According to Big 12 bylaws (these are dated but still relevant), departing schools must give two years' notice.

Short answer: That probably ain't happenin' with A&M. If the school gives less than a year's notice, which seems likely here, it must forfeit 90 percent of two years' worth of payouts. That comes to approximately $30 million. Consider that a starting point for negotiations between the school and league.

By the way, Nebraska paid $9.2 million to move to the Big Ten, basically 50 percent of a year's payout. Colorado paid approximately $6 million.

Then there is the question of whether the Big 12 wants to claim tortuous interference on the part of the SEC. Street term: Poaching. That's what that SEC presidents meeting was about a couple of weeks ago. I was told the presidents huddled with SEC lawyers to determine the best legal path.

Texas A&M has to extricate itself legally from the Big 12 before it jumps into, ahem, bed with the SEC.

Loftin wrote " ... If Texas A&M withdraws ... we want to do so in a way that complies with the bylaws and is supportive of your efforts to seek a new member ..."

That made the letter seem official and legal but was it final? Remember, "If Texas A&M withdraws ..."

Doesn't anybody care about the kids?

Texas A&M begins Big 12 divorce proceedings

Texas A&M just say your leaving the Big XII so that conference can move on, go to the SEC and get your ass handed to you on weekly basis because the SEC has won the BCS title the last five years. You might have had your football program around with a decent record but in the SEC those teams will eat you alive and if you finish above .500 that would be something in itself. Enjoy your 7-5, 6-6 seasons thats what is going to end up happening.

A&M

Check collegefootballnews.com, article, "And the best program of all time is...".
Going by AP polls since 1936, A&M is the #20 program of all-time.  Which is pretty good, and would be better except for recent years.
I'm a TN fan, and when I lived in TX I rooted agaist A&M because they're so conservative, and because they have an attitude that the A&M experience somehow transcends every other college experience in the US.
But no matter who likes them, they will be a great addition to te SEC.

A&M WILL compete!

I've  lived my whole life in SEC nation except for 10 years in Houston.

TX A&M has great facilities, huge alumni base, rabid fan base, great recruiting area, great football tradition ( except last 15 years), strong men and women's Bball, and they just won ALL 4 national track titles, men/women's indoor/outdsoor,, an all-time first.  A&M has made some strange head coaching choices in the last 15 years or so, that's really the only FB problem.

Texas A&M begins Big 12 divorce proceedings

Remember what I said about aggy always moving the proverbial goalposts whenever arguing? Case in point:

Actually in the time span that I used, the Aggies are 8-16 in bowl games. Texas is 13-14
How many BCS bowls has aggy won during whatever  time span you want to conveniently choose? ZERO? Thanks for playing.  Time to move on and steamroll (or get teabagged by) the SEC.

Face the facts, the only time the horns were really any good was when Vince Young had more athletic ability than Mac Brown had coaching ability.
Spoken like a true aggy who knows nothing about football and thinks that the world revolves around Texas' armpit (College Station).  So which is it?  If you weren't so stupid, you'd realize that Vince won 2 BCS bowls and McCoy won 2 BCS bowls. Meaning Colt McCoy has won more BCS bowl games than aggy (the team) has even played in. LOL - silly aggy. How many BCS bowls have you won, AGAIN???? Played in???? ROTFL

"Yellleaders" at A&M are from a time when A&M was an all male military school.  It's called a tradition.  I'm begining to wonder if good looking females are really what you were looking for.  I, myself found plenty of them there and even married one of them.
Way to confuse separate statements, Guido. My point was that your "yell leaders" look like mechanics inclined away from heterosexuality. The comment on the quality of female talent on your campus was entirely separate - or intended to be, had I not remembered the aggy tendency to project and conflate.  For the record, she's not really good looking if it took 19 Irish car bombs at the Dixie Chicken before any other guy would look at her.

Droopy51,

While your childrens' book length reply to my 'argument' post was cute, it doesn't merit much of a response. If you like having 'fruity' looking yell leaders, that's your prerogative, big guy. Do note; it only took you two sentences to revert back to typical aggy insults like "LGBT" and "t-sip" to name a few.
Charles Whitman? 1960s? Who's stuck in the past, loser?

Look on the bright side you did get home victories over pwerhouses like Florida Atlantic and Wyoming.  Don't see how the horns didn't get a BCS bowl with those quality wins.

And you finished the sentence with LOL?  What are you a 7th grade girl?
Meanwhile your sorry excuse for the next Vanderbilt level football program in the SEC has managed to make how many appearances in how many bowls during the last two decades? How many wins? 1? 2?

I find it hilarious how, when Texas has a down year (after years and years and years of 10 win seasons, multiple BCS bowl wins, and a national championship), aggys jump on it as if it isn't already blindingly obvious to the entire college football world. You're a regular Sherlock Holmes, dude. Captain Obvious. Meanwhile, aggy managed to hang on to a victory against the worst Texas football team in more than 1.5 decades and win by a touch down during their glorious 9 win, "turnaround" season - before being crushed by LSU in the Cotton Bowl. LOL.

To my fellow CBS Sportsline reader, please go back to my original comment re: arguing with aggys, then check out dropout51's all-too-predictable response.

What he really meant to say is this: "Duhhh..uh uh....I um hate t-sips....and I like ta blame dem fer evurthing bad evah happen to me percious fitin' aggys! Evun if we irrrewevant in fuhtbahl we still demand respek an aTTENtion!!!"

His obligatory response here will be something about how Texas won't play A&M in football anymore because we're maaaaad - classic aggy projection. It's because we'll be playing ND or the equivalent or that your pansy regents, AD and coach won't play us on the Longhorn Network. LOL

Whoops!!! I meant to say that Aggy has played in TWO Big 12 Championship games and one ONE of them.

And you compared Aggie freshman english to 8th grade?

All they have to do is hope that the BCS brings the GalleryFurnitureDotCom Bowl into the fold. LOL

What bowl did the horns play last year?  I must have been really hung over on Newyears because I don't remember seeing the horns.  Oh, thats right the horns season was officially over on Thanksgiving night when they lost to A&M and were not bowl eligible.  That will happen when you lose to UCLA, Iowa State (Not the Hawkeyes - the Cyclones), Baylor, and A&M - AT HOME.  Look on the bright side you did get home victories over pwerhouses like Florida Atlantic and Wyoming.  Don't see how the horns didn't get a BCS bowl with those quality wins.

And you finished the sentence with LOL?  What are you a 7th grade girl?

Texas A&M begins Big 12 divorce proceedings

ready,

How do you argue with a long horn?

You can't.  There is now way to argure with a longhorn, because they are so full of themselves and they deam everyone inferior.

How many longhorns does it take to change a lightbulb? One.  They just hold the bulb up and the whole world revolves around them.  That is actually what longhorns believe in their heart.

4) Ignore history and adjust the goalposts to suit your point. Case in point: "Hey! I know the Longhorns are DESTROYING the aggys in all time football wins, but for the last XX years, Aggy has the lead!!!" - Then proceed to forget that the Aggys have played in exactly two bowls during that period and lost both of them meanwhile compiling a world-beating two, TWO Big 12 titles in 15 years. It's obviously time for A&M to move on and dominate the SEC!!!

Like I said, the games my ancestors watched don't reall have any real meaning today.  Do they?  But if games from before the Ford administration are important to you than so be it.  Enjoy.

Actually in the time span that I used, the Aggies are 8-16 in bowl games. Texas is 13-14.  You point out that A&M has TWO Big 12 titles....how many does t.u. have?  THREE!!! Oh, my the horns have really owned the Big 12 haven't they.  I guess two titles is pathetic but THREE titles is world beating.

Face the facts, the only time the horns were really any good was when Vince Young had more athletic ability than Mac Brown had coaching ability.

5) Be thankful that your school doesn't have a team of quasi-fruit "yell leaders" dressed up in 1940s mechanics' jumpsuits and that there are exactly ZERO good looking females on your campus during the school year.

Really?  How about t.u. having one of the largest GLB organizations in the nation?  And you also have "male" cheerleaders.  I'm sure they are all straight.  The "Yellleaders" at A&M are from a time when A&M was an all male military school.  It's called a tradition.  I'm begining to wonder if good looking females are really what you were looking for.  I, myself found plenty of them there and even married one of them.

6) Remember that everything; EVERYTHING bad that ever happens to your team is your big brother, Texas' fault.

Once again you are full of yourself and are really out of touch with reality.

7) NEVER mention anything about bonfires.

Real class you are showing there - t-sip.  How about I bring up high powered rifles and tall buildings?  Or football players mugging people on 6th Street.  C'mon aren't you paying them enough?

So remember fellow readers when you get into an argument with longhorns, they don't believe in Copernicus theory that the earth revolves around they Sun, they believe that the entire universe revolves around Austin, Texas.  Evidently, Dan Beebe believes that also.

Texas A&M begins Big 12 divorce proceedings

Whoops!!! I meant to say that Aggy has played in TWO Big 12 Championship games and one ONE of them.

Quite obviously it's time for bigger and better things for Aggy. Soon they will exert their sheer football might on the hapless SEC as they cruise to championship after championship and multiple MNC BCS titles.  For proof of their ability to do this, one must only look at their stellar bowl record over the past 30 or so years. All they have to do is hope that the BCS brings the GalleryFurnitureDotCom Bowl into the fold. LOL

By the way, Texas has 114 athletic championships in the Big 12. Aggy has 53. The SEC surely has no idea how badly the Aggys are about to dominate the conference!!!!

How to argue with aggys

1) Always use lower case letters to refer to the current target of your ire.

2) Always reverse these lower case letters. Makes it even more demeaning! Duh. Then, when you're 38 years old, continue to refer to your rivals by 8th grade (or Aggy freshman) type names like "tsips".

3) Always forget about reality and argue from a place of sheer insecurity while projecting your self loathing onto others. Case in point: The Big 12 Network that Aggy didn't want.

4) Ignore history and adjust the goalposts to suit your point. Case in point: "Hey! I know the Longhorns are DESTROYING the aggys in all time football wins, but for the last XX years, Aggy has the lead!!!" Then proceed to forget that the Aggys have played in exactly two bowls during that period and lost both of them - meanwhile compiling a world-beating two, TWO Big 12 titles in 15 years. 6) Remember that everything; EVERYTHING bad that ever happens to your team is your big brother, Texas' fault.

7) NEVER mention anything about bonfires.

If you, fellow reader, can remember these basic rules, you will be able to successfully understand an average aggy argument.
