It turns out Oregon was that dumb.

It did get in bed with a talent scout to lure tailback Lache Seastrunk to Oregon if you draw the thinnest of conclusions from Friday's Yahoo! Sports story. It turns out that talent scout/mentor/third party/opportunist Will Lyles did essentially Photoshop a national recruiting package together follow Yahoo! Sports' initial report.

I didn't think Oregon could be so dumb. I was wrong.

The report details what is clearly a close relationship between Oregon and Lyles. The story says relationship with Chip Kelly goes back to 2007. The NCAA won't even have to try hard to classify Lyles as a representative of the university's athletic interests. In other words, a booster.

The tragedy of it is, Oregon and Kelly didn't have to do any of this. The program had the support of Nike behind it. Kelly himself is a heck of a coach and a tireless recruiter, although even that label must now be in question.

This isn't a case of the media fireflies being drawn to an upstart championship contender. The likes of Kelly, Jim Tressel and Bruce Pearl are making it too easy for us. They're sloppy and arrogant in their alleged wrongdoing. Think about how simpler life would be for Tressel if he had merely walked down the hall to his athletic director with those emails. Pearl would still be coaching if he told the truth. Kelly didn't need Seastrunk that badly. So far, the kid hasn't panned out.

Instead, he allegedly funneled tens of thousands of dollars to a shady character with a relationship to a recruit. My God, it's Texas football. There's plenty to go around for everyone. Was Seastrunk worth it? We know now the answer is no.

Fallout? According to the story, the NCAA has already been in to talk to Lyles. But Lyles said they didn't ask specific questions that Yahoo! Sports did (go figure). You can bet they'll be back in wanting to see Lyles' emails and phone records too. Why wouldn't he cooperate? Lyles has the morals of a slug anyway. It looks to me that the only reason he rolled on Oregon was that they weren't going to pay him again.

Be very concerned Duck Nation. Oregon is in line for major penalties, the kind that burn a program to the ground. USC-like. Kelly's job could be in jeopardy. This is not USC looking the other way while Reggie Bush took money, this is a willful attempt to gain a recruiting and competitive advantage.

Can anyone win big without cheating? The question remains unanswered.

Kids who receive a free degree (that they can use the rest of their lives to get employment), a degree worth thousands and thousands of dollars in exchange for playing a game they purpotedly love to play, kids who have set work hours, and are given the opportunity to learn their trade to step into the pros, receive housing and are fed (well) during this process is just like slave labor?  My God, you mean these kids are often forcibly pulled from their homes by strangers, shackled into the holds of a small ships, sailed thousands of miles from their homes, and if they survive that, they are sold to the higest bidder, with their parents, sisters, brothers all possibly being sold to other high bidders.  They are made to live in squalid conditions, beaten with whips or worse when they don't perform on the field. They are not allowed to learn readin', writin, and 'rythmatic? They are traded between owners or sold ad hoc whenever their current owner feels like it.  If they decide to leave their University, they have bounties placed on their heads and are hunted down, many times killed, or at worst, returned to the horrid conditions they ran from.


Yep, playing college sports for a free education, is just like slavery.

yes it's slave labor, in every sense of the word. the athletes sell their bodies to the ncaa, and the ncaa recieves 100% of the profits in perpetuity for their likeness, their uniform, them simply being them. 

and if you don't, please, ask yourself honestly -- if a third party earned the rights to YOUR name, YOUR likeness, YOUR accomplishments and achievements, IN PERPETUITY, what would you think?  If you respond with anything other than "that's f*cking nuts", then i would question your sanity. nothing wrong with being on the right side of the issue before everyone else realizes they're wrong. just asking you what you'd do in a college athlete's position. i was not blessed enough to compete, but i know in my job, if i achieve a breakthrough and receive nothing for it, i'd be pissed. i would hope you understand the athlete' position in the same spot. it's his or her body, it's his or her accomplishment. why should the ncaa be the ONLY thing to profit from it?



No, the athletes are given between 140 to 200k for the rights to their name, etc.  If an athlete redshirts and plays 5 years, it's 175-250k.  Again, not bad for an 18-22 yr old.  I would venture only the Tim Tebow's of the world surpass or come anywhere near earning that much money for their likeness, uniform, etc.  98% make next to nothing for a school for their name of likeness.  The ones that are good enough to be in high demand are also the ones good enough to go pro and make millions because of the opportunity given to them by the school.  Think about it, there are 85 kids on a team, and I'd guess only 2 or 3 at max are big name players that drive up revenues.  But tell me, how many lab rats sign similar contracts after graduation.  After all, universities often take in millions in research money, yet those kids make next to nothing for selling their minds.  The differance is most aren't black, so terms like slave labor are never uttered. 


And more importantly, if the kid doesn't want to play football or basketball, NO ONE IS MAKING HIM!  He can go to school as a regular student and come out thousands in debt if he likes.   EVERYONE knows the rules when they sign the letter of intent, and there's a reason 99.9% choose to play sports.  They and their parents choose to take the 200k, the opportunity to make millions in pro sports, and subsequent business opportunities afforded to fomer athletes.  Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.   

So to answer your question, I question the sanity of bleeding hearts.

Athletes sell their bodies to the NCAA for a scholarship to get a college education as well as a chance to play professionally.  That is not salve labor.  The question then becomes, what does the NCAA and colleges do with all this money being generated?  If it's for scholarships for academics and student-athletes, I'm all for it.  If it is to build better facilities for academics and student-athletes, I'm all for it.  If it's to go to pocket the salaries of NCAA officials, college adminstrators, and coaches, then I don't agree.  Where does the money go?

at the expense of slave-labor athletes and education as such. Discussion of specific malefactors is a sideshow, a screen to focus on the disease permeating universities as such.

Slave labor?  I suppose I shouldn't fault your ignorance, I'm sure you've been brainwashed your whole life, but you really have no clue.  The following is paraphrased from an article written by Jay Paterno.  A link to his article will follow.

College players are allowed to work no more than 20 hours per week for 21 weeks, no more than 8 hours per week for 23 weeks, with a mandatory 8 weeks off.  For their maximum 604 hours worked, they receive (from Penn State) an education valued at 34k for in state kids, and 50k for out of state kids.  At those rates, in state kids make $56 per hour and out of state kids make $83 per hour.  How many "nonslave-labor"
; students make anywhere near that much money, all for playing a sport they supposedly love.  How many 18-22 year old kids that don't have an education make 34-50k per year.  How many are subsequently provided the opportunity to make hundreds of thousands more over their lifetime?  And let's not even get into the non-monetary perks (women, food and drink, etc.) 

Slave labor?  Grow up, and get off the bleeding tart bandwagon!!!!!!!

The Question does not remain unanswered. Auburn does not cheat. They won the National Championship with hard work and great coaching, unlike Oregon and Alabama. WAR EAGLE. Auburn rules. Alabama can bite me.

Golfnbeer2: Lyles, if the other reports now surfacing in the Oregon newspapers are to believed, was due another $25,000 from Chip Kelly on top of the $25,000 he has already received.
