War has officially been declared in UA-AU

Alabama and Auburn have gone to war and I predicted it.

I told you in February to expect a response to Harvey Updyke's alleged poisoning of the Toomer's Corner trees. History has proved that something would happen. People have died over the rivalry, so should we be surprised that Updyke reportedly was assaulted after a court appearance on Wednesday?

Absolutely not.

What was simmering below the surface now has boiled over. I told you in Wednesday's story the rivalry may have never been as fierce as it is now. Alabama can't stand Auburn and, it seems, Auburn can't stand success. For the first time in a long time the two schools are somewhat equals on the football field. They can't co-exist. Ever.

Whether you believe Updyke or not, that's not the point. The guy has manipulated this situation. If he wasn't in Alabama, he'd be hired as a Hollywood publicist. I’m writing about it. You're reading about it. SEC types can't get enough of it and blood pressure is boiling in Alabama. Comcast needs to bid on the broadcast rights.

Congrats, Harvey. You got us.

"It's a good thing," my guy Clay Travis tweeted last week, "Auburn and Alabama fans don't have nuclear weapons."

"I'm serious about that."

War has officially been declared in UA-AU

There has always been war between the 2 schools this is nothing new. The series ended for years and only started again due to pressure from the state legislature. The updyke incident will elevate the rivalry from an auburn point of view but from a bama standpoint it changes very little. I'm a bama graduate and i have yet to talk to any tide fan or alumn that embraces or condones Updyke's actions. When news broke that updyke had been beat up at a gas station no one felt pity for him. If it had been true he truely deserved it. Updyke crossed the line. In poisoning those trees, he damaged a sacred symbol of tradition.
However auburn's hands arn't clean. Auburn fans were picking fights(including striking women in these fights) and posting pictures on the net urinating on statues and a auburn jersey put on a statue was shown by CBS. With a sick man like updyke seeing something like that, he is going to retaliate.
Again i don't condone what updyke done. He crossed the line. The poisoning of the trees embarassed and made me ashamed to be an alabama fan.

Way to be out in front of things, Dodd...especially now that Harvey's own lawyer believes that he made the story up.  1) He was dragged from a gas pump to a vacant lot behind the store with what he admitted were "plenty" of people around and no one else saw it. 2) He was admitted to the hospital and released in less than an hour. 3) His own best friend, Wayne, who bailed him out said today on record that Harvey's story was fabricated. 4) He doesn't know how many people attacked him, nor what age or race they were, again, even though they allegedly dragged him 200+ feet. 5) He had repeatedly asked the judge to leave the state but had been denied and now he asks to leave and is granted permission.  Sounds way to fishy to believe.  I feel sorry for Harvey.

War has officially been declared in UA-AU

The "civil' folks of Buckeye land do not believe in isolated, one-on-one violence, they prefer turning their game day celebration into a mass vulgarity display. What do I speak of??? About a decade ago I was invited to a game in Columbus were I witnessed every third T-shirt emblazoned in bold letters with the immortal words, F*ck Michigan. There were more "Eff UM" attire than Maurice Clarrett jerseys!!!Truly bizarre, especially considering these high-and-mighty Big Ten fans continually feel the need to judge on out Rebel Flags, Blaze Orange and Hawg hats. Additionally, my 15 y/o accompanied me on the trip and was truly impressed. What made it even MORE IMPRESSIVE was OSU was playing Washington St. on that September day, NOT Michigan.

War has officially been declared in UA-AU

What do you mean "been declared"  I'm 62 and it's been going on all my life,  you've got to go to the Middle East to see longer running feuds.  What sent it over the top is bammer fans thought they were a lock to repeat as Nation Champions and AUBURN WOULD NEVER WIN ANOTHER TITLE,  wrong!  On the field it just doesn't get any better,  off the field it can't get any worse.  Too many bammers are too heavily invested in their program,  and the Six Million Dollar Man makes it worse.  Auburn may talk about being "All In"  but if lil' Nicky faulters where does the "updyke nation" go from here.  At Auburn we don't spend millions on self promotion and we don't have a "Skull and Bones" society working behind the scenes to discredit any criticism of our program, yet( it seems we're working on that)  If our program slips some this year we can deal with it.  If bammer gets blinded by a "whiteout" in Happy Valley and then loses a conference game or two,  they'll start a Jihad.  Auburn fans have never stooped to reckless vandelism,  you can't find any accounts of AU fans shooting their own children,  murdering their hosts when LSU comes from behind and beats them,  shooting their husband in the head when UT makes a field goal,  but it's all public record for the "updykes" of this world.  Why don't you print these stories once in a while?

Thank you AU Tiger and good luck to you and yours. As you know, emotions often run high in SEC country and NO TEAM'S FANS (myself included) are immune from occasional lapses of stupidity. I have often tried to offer rationale and cogent responses to ridiculous claims, outlandish allegations or outright lies perpetrated by fans of MY beloved Tigers. For this I am often the object of scorn and ridicule as my LSU brothers feel I am "sucking-up" to fans of other teams. I think the fact I am an LSU grad twice over, and my daughter got her PhD from Vanderbilt and I have been on the faculty/board of three SEC schools, none of which are LSU or Vanderbilt, give me a unique perspective, not a better perspective, just a unique one. Additionally, I am as avid an LSU fan as you will find anywhere, I LOVE LSU…THE INSTITUTION, HISTORY AND TRADITION, not just LSU FOOTBALL on Saturday afternoons in the fall.  For that reason I find it important to comport myself in a manner that bestows credit upon what I consider a fine institution by not dealing in innuendo, supposition and falsehoods.

LSUdabest1, thanks for the comments.  You have a very good assessment of the situation, and I agree with you that one fact about "wars" is that the truth takes a seat in the background to sensationalistic comments and allegations.  I consider it an honor to consider you a "respectful rival fan".  I wish all of our SEC brethren (especially those in my state of Alabama) had such discernment in their opinions.  I wish you and YOUR Tigers all the best next year, except on Oct. 22nd :-)
