Lloyd Carr says Notre Dame will join Big Ten

Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr has predicted that Notre Dame will eventually join the Big Ten.

Carr was speaking to an audience and said the current conference upheaval will not end in the near future. Boise State kicked off the proceedings by joining the Mountain West in June. It was quickly followed by Nebraska joining the Big Ten beginning in 2011.

Notre Dame has several game contracts going out several years, including a long-term deal to play BYU as an independent.

Lloyd Carr says Notre Dame will join Big Ten

This conversaition always comes up and THE ONLY WAY ND WILL EVER JOIN THE BIG TEN IS IF THE CONFERENCES GO TO 16 TEAMS.  If 12 team conferences remain they will join the big east once the big 12 gets 12 teams again (i know beebe said they are sticking with ten, if you really believe him and they will turn down that championship game money, your gulliable in my book) and the big east finds three other teams. They are lining them up.  Villinova, Temple, and Memphis make sense in the basketball dominated big east.  When they get 12 teams in football, they will have to drop all the basketball only schools...geogretown, marquette, st johns  depaul will be gone for the sake of a football championship game.  Getting NOVA to expand into D1A football allows them to keep they in bball, and if uconn and cinn can have big years in the big east at football there is hope nova could do the same.  Memphis is a natural fit and offsets the loss some of those bball only schools with a strong program of their own.  Temple is the best of the rest and was once in the conference, and has gotten its act together recently enough to get back in the Big East.  Add in Notre dame and the big east has a championship game.  I believe that the big 12 will get BYU and TCU/Houston.  I know people will say that byu and nd have a long list of scheduales as independents...well they can cancel those games...if nebraska and colorado can just jump ship of a conference then nd and byu can get out of an independent schedule if they really wanted to.

12 team conferences

pac 10---good
big 10---good
sec---good
acc---good
big 12---south stays the same, north adds TCU and BYU
Big East---West:  Notre Dame, Pitt, Cincinnati, Louisville, Memphis, Nova

;     &nbs
p;    East:  WVU, Rutgers, UCONN, South Flordia, Syracuse, Temple

Some people think 16 team conference is right around the corner i think its going to be a while before that happens.

PS i know that cuse and s.f are a lil more west than nova and temple but could not have those two in the same division

What do you think??

For the love of God.....

Neuter Dame will NEVER join the Big Ten.

If they did that, they would actually have to *gasp* PLAY SOME REAL COMPETITION!!!!!    Oh No!!!!!!

Ohio State, Purdue, Iowa...sounds a lot tougher than the hand picked bottom feeders they get to play every year. They'd have to give up their sacred little automatic BCS #8 or above bid if they actually joined a conference.

No way this happens. The little darlings of the BCS will stay right where they are as an independent and get all the benefits from a hand picked schedule and an automatic BCS bid.

ND is slowly losing its relevence in football. The problem it is facing in the future is with 16-team conferences coming down the road is that the "Big Boys" will have most of their schedule full with relevent games and will look for tuneup games before Conference play begins. ND will only be able to fill their schedule with cupcakes like BYU, Navy, Army, a few Big East teams, a few 1aa schools, and a sure loss to USC every year. The strength of schedule will not be there. Why any sane network would give them a huge TV contract is a complete mystery. Good luck staying independent.

@mwyatt:

ND's alignment with the Big East has NOTHING to do with football. They come into the BCS bowl situation under the "ND Clause", and nothing more. Now if you're talking March Madness (or any other sport), that's another thing entirely. They go BE for everything else, but football is pure Independent.

Lloyd the loser huh?  Lloyd Carr won more games (122) at MEEEEchigan than only two other coaches....Fielding Yost (165) and Bo Schembechler (194).  His winning percentage (among coaches with more than 50 games coached) is 5th behind Yost, Schembechler, Gary Moeller and Fritz Crisler.  Good job checking up on the actual numbers.  Oh yeah, Carr also coached the Wolverines to their last national championship in 1997 (something Schembechler never did).

I believe ND's TV contract is worth 5-7 million a year while the Big Ten pays its schools about 12 million a year from the Big Ten network.  ND does have the advantage that they don't have to share bowl revenue, but unless they have a sudden improvement in performance leading to better bowl bids, the bowl revenue from Big Ten teams in the middle of the conference will soon outstrip that return on average too.  In fact, I would hazzard a guess that unless ND has a big year soon, the next BCS agreement will treat ND just the same as any other independent or non-automatic conference member instead of the sweetheart deal they have now.  When that happens, ND will have to join a major conference or risk becoming irrelevant in the major college football world.  ND still has a devoted fan base so they will still be attractive to a major conference and to bowl committees though.

I would think a die hard UM fan would realize that RichRod is 3 times the loser Carr was.  Then again, keep living in denial.

You called it right Hawkeye, great journalism as usual. I'm a die hard fan of UM Football have been for years. Since when does Lloyd the Loser's comments mean anything. Worst coach in UM history, he still doesn't know what the hell is talking about

Not unless the money starts to run out. If they can continue to get lucrative TV and game deals without sharing, there is no reason for them to join the Big 10.  And considering they have struggled against the Big 10 recently, I'm not sure it may not be wise for them to make the move anytime soon and have to deal with Penn State, Ohio State Iowa and Nebraska on a yearly basis.  Their alignment with the Big East give them their best shot at a BCS bowl, considering the Big East's struggles of late.  But in the end, it's all about the money, and as long as they're making big money being quasi-independent, they don't have any incentive to join the Big 10.
