The Football Writers Association of America has vacated USC's 2004 national championship and asked the school to return the Grantland Rice Trophy that symbolized that title.

The announcement was made Thursday morning after a resolutions committee voted by confidential ballot. USC will be eligible for the FWAA's preseason poll but cannot win the trophy in 2010. The action was taken after NCAA penalties were handed down in June. Among other violations, the NCAA concluded that former tailback Reggie Bush competing while ineligible

The Grantland Rice Trophy has been awarded continuously to its national champion since 1954 by the FWAA. The BCS is on record as saying it will vacate the USC title if the school's NCAA appeal fails. The Heisman Trophy Trust is still discussing its stance on Bush's 2004 award. Shortly after taking the job, new USC AD Pat Haden ordered the school's copy of Bush's trophy returned to the trust.

Tim Griffin, the current FWAA president, wrote this in his letter notifying USC of the FWAA's decisions: "Had these facts been known, USC would not have been selected for the award ... in light of standards applicable to FWAA poll participants, award candidates and award recipients. All finalists for FWAA team and individual awards, including the Grantland Rice Award and Trophy, reasonably are presumed to have been in material compliance with certain qualifying standards at the time of award issuance."

The coaches' poll is not ranking USC this season because the school is on NCAA probation. USC remains eligible to be ranked in the Associated Press poll and can finish No. 1. It is No. 14 in the AP preseason poll. The AP did not strip USC of its 2004 title.

The FWAA took no action to elevate a new champion for 2004. It stated that USC is eligible for its preseason poll but will not be eligible to be voted on in its season-ending poll. Auburn was also notified of Thursday's action by the FWAA. In addition to USC, Auburn and Utah also finished undefeated that season.

The FWAA is one of four major championship selectors recognized by the NCAA. This is the first time the FWAA has taken such action.

well i am not here to be just looked at. i come with facts. and i would love it if you could come up with some of your own.

if you could please prove that USC & Pete Carroll are cheaters. a link please. anything would be helpful. thanks.

the only thing i  am aware of is Pete that was an violation was a hiring pf an old friend for 19 days. before the season had started in the off season. thats only a secondary violation according to the NCAA. WUP! my fault unless your USC but for everyone else it's a secondary.

i know your not talking about the intern program either because before the program even started the NCAA approved every move. The investigation led to nothing while they looked but since they found nothing they decided to to bring that up with out proper precedents.

So please let me know where i can find them cheating. Lastly somewhere reputable.

"Dear FWAA,

The University of Southern California Trojans would like to apologize for the amount of time that it has taken for us to return the Grantland Rice Trophy. It seems that the problem is that we were unaware that we had received the trophy. In fact, we didn't even know that your organization existed or that you gave out any awards. We did, however, manage to find the box (unopened as you can see) in the women's soccer team offices. The person who receives our mail thought that FWAA has something to do with women's sports and sent the box there.

We would like to thank you for recoginizing the accomplishments of the 2004 USC Trojans mens football team and were honored to have held the title while we did. Now that we are aware of your existence, rest assured that if we are fortunate enough to receive such a prestigious award in the future, we will proudly display it in Heritage Hall.

That is hilarious! It about sums up my thoughts on this. Is the FWAA poll even listed here?

I know right?  And that was the biggest award you guys won!

Actually it is almost embarassing to see how many USC fans and alums don't care that they cheated.  And as a society we wonder why Bonds (also California - as a matter of fact, all the 'roid cases from athletes playing in Cali) and Sosa and the rest do what they did.  But when I see an entire institution blind to its own faults, and known transgressions are given a free pass, it casts aspersions on the characters of anyone affiliated with the school.  It certainly makes me think twice about hiring anyone with USC on the diploma.  One, who knows if its earned, and two, they will hold teh same values as theor institution, and that is that cheating is not only okay, but preferred.

Just remember, you can't spell Trojan without O.J.

Comeon.  If I had my players take video game classes and get credit for not attending classes, I can get the best recruits.  I thought the new admin was going to fix this.  Some times tradition (reggie) is hard to break.

I heard that it is an internal admin mess and possible more infractions.  Lets change fighton to cheaton

I don't like USC.  But the fact of the matter is that what Bush did had no effect on his performance on the field.  He would have been just as good whether his parents lived in an expensive house or not.  And there's no way to know what would have happened if he had not been on the team.  There are simply too many variables that come into play in that scenario.  I think it's wrong that fans and players who were completely innocent are the ones being punished.  Players and coaches who cheat should be barred from moving on to the NFL and making the big bucks and unscrupulous agents should lose their licenses.  Period!

kj, please step away from the crack pipe. It is affecting your grasp of reality. Was Auburn a national championship caliber team in 2004? Yes. Are they the only great team the SEC has produced in the BCS era? NO! They are not a great BCS era team period, let alone the only great SEC team in the BCS era. One excellent year does not make you great. Consistent achievement is what makes a team great. So if you're looking for SEC teams that should be used in the same sentence as the word great in the BCS era there are only two. LSU and Florida...period. Both LSU and Florida have two BCS National Championships and both have 3 SEC Championships. No other SEC can match those accomplishments. Auburn's one SEC Championship and one mythical share of the national championship in 2004 does not ever remotely qualify Auburn for greatness. Thank you for playing, please try again....

National Championships in the BCS Era (since '98)
Florida - 2
LSU - 2
Tennessee - 1
Alabama - 1

SEC Championships in the BCS Era (since '98)
Florida - 3 (including a 28-6 butt-whooping of Auburn in the 2000 SEC Championship)
LSU - 3
Alabama - 2
Georgia -2
Tennessee - 1
Auburn -1

Simply put, that Auburn team was the only great team the SEC has produced in the BCS era and they did when the conference was the best in the land, something no other SEC team has done, ever.
