Dareus reportedly declared ineligible

HOOVER, Ala. -- You want surreal?

As Nick Saban was on the podium here at the SEC media days railing against agents, his star defensive lineman Marcel Dareus was declared ineligble. The Tuscaloosa News reported the news literally while Saban was in the process of calling agents "pimps."

I asked Saban as he came off the podium if the report was true, he got a quizzical look on his face and said, "That's not true." We'll know more as time goes on. The News cited an anonymous source. If Saban didn't know and if the report is true he is going to be a lot madder than he was Wednesday on the podium.

Typically in these cases the player is declared ineligible by the school. The school then works through the NCAA to reinstate him. Don't think that Dareus is necessarily done for the season.

Dareus reportedly declared ineligible

I'm starting to think that the amount of stupid posted here grows exponentially the closer football season approaches.

Dareus is not inelligible.  People need to stop running off half-cocked with partial information.

While Bama will suffer the consequences of his absence if he doesn't become eligible again (which I think will happen), this is not a Bama problem, any more than it is a North Carolina problem, or a Florida problem, or whatever. This is a FBS college football epidemic. If all it takes is for a player to attend a freakin' party thrown by the wrong person, then at least a player or two at most major schools is "ineligible". No down side for the agents, certainly no down side for the player near the end of his eligibility...hard to argue. For Dareus, he's stupid because he has 2 years of eligibility left, so this poor choice will end up costing him, both in memories and in dollars.

This is getting old!!!! With Andre the year before and now this? These kids should know better than to do things like this...... I'm sure Saban is livid..... The funny thing is, I was busy today and found out about this from the Dental assistant cleaning my teeth.

The University and Coach Saban did a great job catching this as soon as they did Otherwise they could have faced more penalties if not the death penalty from the NCAA I do agree with Coach Saban about the NFLPA and NFL. Something needs to be done about these agents. Either loosen up on the rules or find some way to make sure these agents stay away from these college kids until their eligibility runs out.

Alabama....they just cannot seem to win anythingof value without having probation, forfeitures, ineligible players, agent involmentsetc..all the itmea needed for a Dirty Program.

WHATS"S UP WIH THAT?

oh let me guess....EVERYBODY does it...Bama just gets caught!!

It's time for the Death Penalty at College Football "Just Most Caught" Cheater...to

Becarefull... Karms is a mother. There is alot of talk that LSU had a player there as well. The thing is though will LSU admit to it or will the NCAA have to come knocking on their door?

A word or two on scholarships.  First, getting a scholarship is a year to year thing. You get a scholarship but then you have to make the team each year to keep it.  It's not automatic.  Second, all the players on a team are not necessarily on scholarship, some are walk ons that are paying out of pocket.  If they're good they will often get a scholarship later and it may actually be an academic scholarship so it doesn't count against the NCAA limit.

To everybody screaming for the death penalty, it's not happening. And it has nothing to do with the fact that it's Alabama. The NCAA is well aware that a "death penalty" in all actuality a 20+ year punishment that can seriously effect the very financial stability of a program. They aren't going to use it again because no university is stupid enough to do anything deserving of a 20+ year setback.

Secondly, to all the Bama fans blabbering about "we're just gonna keep on rollin", you're wrong. The tide has been derailed multiple times. Nobody is invincible to the NCAA. Even though I don't think Alabama will suffer anything serious stemming from this due to the fact that he didn't play in any games while ineligible, be aware that Alabama is treading on thin ice. You guys are still on probation and are already classified as "repeat offenders" by the NCAA.

All the people saying Bama is at fault here are crazy.  Schools can't monitor these kids 365 days a year.  If Dareus messed up, he should be punished, but so should the agent who absolutely knew he was doing something illegal.  Don't blame Saban or the school for Dareus's actions.
