Boise State to the Mountain West

It's a few days late but Boise State will become the 10th member of the Mountain West Conference.

WAC commissioner Karl Benson told Friday morning that the deal had been consumated. The Mountain West announced the deal a few minutes later.

Mountain West presidents reportedly were ready to invite Boise at their league meetings on Monday until the possibility of grabbing Colorado became an option. When CU announced it was headed to the Pac-10 on Thursday that opened up the spot for Boise.

The Broncos bring a 26-1 record the past two seasons that will count toward the MWC's fight to become a BCS league. There are two more seasons to run on a four-year evaluation period. All conferences will be evaluated on average finish in the BCS and conference strength among other factors. The MWC believes it is close to what would be temporary BCS automatic qualifier status in 2012 and 2013.

The MWC might not be done. Depending on how expansion shakes out, the league could be interested in taking in Big 12 castoffs that don't make the cut in the Pac-10 or Big Ten. That's good news for the likes of Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Baylor and Missouri.

Yes, the Mountain West will become an AQ conference. It will either happen in 2012 or if the Big 12 dies they might pick up their automatic bid. Either way by adding BSU they will get that automatic bid, unless TCU or Utah bolt from MWC, which I highly doubt.

Boise State to the Mountain West

There is one thing that could upset this.  What if A&M goes to the SEC instead of the Pac 10. Rumors have it that the Pac 10 would want KU to replace them (Making Pac 10 basketball somewhat relevant again).  But the problem is ,that like OK/OSU, Kansas and KSU are linked together but the Pac 10 is only looking to add one school not too.  If the Pac 10 tried to take Kansas, you would probably have a long, drawn out, bitter congressional hearings where nothing gets done.  So the question becomes does the Pac 10 take Utah (SLC market one of the fastest growing areas in the country) or the traditional basketball school KU and all the legal issues with it.  One thing is certain the Pac 10 will add at least one other team.  Another question someone asked on here and the dumb college experts asked on ESPN, why didn't the Pac 10 add Boise State.  The reason is all about markets and there really isn't one that would benefit the Pac schools in Idaho and BSU only offers football, weak in all other areas so there was no attraction to add BSU to the Pac 10

Good list here.  I don't believe thw MWC has a shot at Missouri though.  Additionally, Houston really does nothing other than add a television market.  Nevada is a more likely possibility. (same/better quality athletics than SDSU, Wyoming, UNLV, AF, & Baylor) with sweet 16 / four consecutive bowls under their belt.  Keeping at-least two schools per state makes sense, especially come rivalry game time.  Other possibility..... Tulsa???

A booby prize is what Mizzou gets.  For all their talk of bolting for the Big 10 with their 7 million TV sets (no matter 3/4 of 'em ain't tuned to Mizzou sports programming) and better academic fit, Mizzou's out in the cold.  Couldn't have happened to a bigger, better wannabe.  Mizzou is the drunk guy at the party with giant Dolce Gabana shades and a popped collar Affliction T-shirt.  Put on a good show, but nothing worthwhile underneath.  Damn near alienated all the Big 12 with all their tough talk.  Reap the benefits of such braggadocio.

Who cares where Mizzou goes?  Go to the Mountain West.  Boise State, Utah, TCU will all beat Mizzou down.  Or maybe hop to the MAC, may have a shot there.  Or Conference USA.  Have fun Tigers.  MIZ (see ya real soon!) ZOU (You? You're worthless), T-I-G-E-R-S.

Right on, thoughts exactly (almost). I think keeping the MWC intact (with the new addition of BSU) and adding KU and Kstate would be awesome, for football and basketball. Schools like ISU and Baylor would add nothing and Missouri will be an independent for a year or two. For the MWC to get to 14-16 teams, more teams would need to be added...hence Fresno St. and UNR (Nevada-Reno), plus UTEP and Houston, for more Texas exposure and close proximity. All teams would add a good football and or basketball program...the money makers, and add more TX and CA exposure plus the Houston tv market.

Bad Move for the Mountain West

This certainly smells like the first of a few moves for the MWC.  The problem I have with this is all the original MWC teams left the WAC after the conference ballooned to 16 teams and natural rivalries like Utah / BYU and CSU / Air Force weren't going to happen every year.  The teams they are adding will be better than the WAC teams added but I certainly hope they do something to preserve the traditional rivalry games.

I do think you make a good point. Missouri is going to get screwed here. The big 10 probably doesn't want them. The Pac 10 doesn't want them when they get the Texas schools and OK and OK State. The MWC doesn't really need them with Boise St. and possibly the other Big 12 schools coming there. If I were Mizzou I would be felling left out

why would Utah and TCU go to the big 12 without texas, ok, ok state, and nebraska. The rest wouldn't even have a chance to make an auto bcs bowl. And I don't think utah goes anywhere without BYU.
