OK, Minnesota has lost in the NCAA Tournament. Now what?

I reported Thursday night that Auburn is "close" to hiring Tubby Smith as its new basketball coach. That's according to a source close to the situation. Things get a lot easier now that Minnesota's season is over.

It could be nothing, but it is known that the school might be looking for an African-American coach. And Tubby getting back to the SEC would make sense. It's not the pressure cooker of Kentucky. It's a new building and a lot of rebuilding with the Tigers.

Tubby reportedly makes $1.75 million per season at Minny. I'm hearing Auburn would go $2 million per season.

It could get complicated. Tubby's name has come up at Oregon as well. Ducks AD Mike Bellotti announced Friday he was stepping down. Don't know yet who is going to be the interim or who is going to run the search.

The website auburnundercover.com has jumped in with details saying that Auburn AD Jay Jacobs is "highly interested" in Tubby and that there may be mutual interest.

Tubby to Auburn

Using the word "close" in a headline about a coach on the eve of the tournament game is irresponsible and highly suspect.  It's a shame that the very talented broadcasting team at CBS has to be associated with this hack in any way.

@doubledribble....as previously stated during Tubbys 10 years at UK he won MORE GAMES than any other coach or program in the ENTIRE COUNTRY....sure the first year of that he was using pitinos kids...whats your answer for the other 9 years?? u are a tool who knows nothing about basketball if you seriously think Tubby only has a job because of his race

in 18 seasons he has a .716 winning percentage...16 NCAA tourny appearances...3 elite eights..5 sweet sixteens...a national title and 17 straight 20+ win seasons....yup hes horrible alright....god people dont even bother to look up stats before they say dumb stuff anymore

As usual, Dodd, your ability to report is unparalleled.  I say that because there is not another sportswriter in America that reports rumor and innuendo as actual news.  Your ability to spin complicated webs of fabrication and inaccuracy are unapproachable to even the writers at "Weekly World News."
As you continue to cover the NCAA tourney, will you at least post your bracket as well so the readers can anticipate other unsubstantiated rumors nefariously posted for whatever reason or other.  At least then, we can place our bets accordingly.  You know, if gambling were legal anyway.
What a hack.

Tubby to Auburn

Wrong.  You must be listening to your Mom, who is the only person who thinks you know anything.  Please re-read what you write before you post it.  It reads:  "Tubby is going to Auburn, or maybe,  urrrh . . . it could be a rumor."  Do they pay you for this?  Hey, Elvis MAY be at the Final Four . . .

Tubby to Auburn

Tubby Smith is a very good coach and teacher for young college men.  I would love to see him continue at Minnesota, but would respect a change if Coach Smith and his family move for an opportunity that is based on his personal goals.

Coach Smith what every your decision; thank you for restoring a winning spirit at the University of Minnesota.

Signed:  A Golden Gopher moved West.

Tubby to Auburn

Why would any school want Tubby Smith?  He has never won anything of significance since winning the NCAA with Rick Pitino's recruits.  That's right.  Pitino's kids!  Tubby couldn't recruit winning players at Kentucky or at Minnesota.  Conference championships mean nothing.  He doesn't win in the NCAA's.  I don't think any African American players want to play for him, and he needs them to win.  If he wasn't an African American coach, he would be out of a job.  But because he is black, someone will keep hiring him.  I'm not saying that because I'm prejudiced, it's the truth.  He's a great assistant, but a lousy head coach.

And now that Tubby just mentioned you were full of shit to Rivals/Yahoo, wtf does your pathetic "journalistic" azz have to say.  Some of the worst possibly rumor mongering I have ever seen.  If I were you, I would quit effective immediately for such a horrible contribution to CBS.  I would not pass go, and I would not collect any monetary value whatsoever...
