Oregon's season at stake

In what might be the most stunning news of the offseason, Oregon's Chip Kelly took a bold step Friday suspending quarterback Jeremiah Masoli.

Masoli pleaded guilty to a felony, second-degree burglary, but authorities knocked it down to a misdemeanor. According to reports, Masoli probably won't have to serve any jail time. It look from this distance (I'm courtside at the Big 12 Tournament) that Masoli didn't get suspended so much for the crime but for lying to Kelly.

Given the climate at Oregon with all the arrests, this was a deal breaker. According to the Eugene Register-Guard, Masoli had previously told Kelly that he did nothing wrong.

Tailback LaMichael James will be suspended for a game after the altercation with his girlfriend.

Oregon was going to be a preseason top 10 team. Don't know where to put them right now.

I know this, it just became a lot easier for some team other than Oregon to win the Pac-10.

Here's a statement from Oregon president Richard Lariviere that just moved to my e-mail:

"The University of Oregon expects all of its students to be responsible, law-abiding members of our community. Recently, several UO student-athletes admitted that they failed to meet these basic expectations and, as a result, they will face consequences.

I have discussed with Coach Kelly the serious nature of the criminal situations for these young men. I am confident that Coach Kelly has carefully and fairly considered the disciplinary actions he is imposing. I know that he understands the high expectations of Oregon's faculty, students and fans."

Darren Thomas is a man child. Masoli getting in trouble could be a blessing in disguise. Better to have his suspension out of the way in the offseason so that the program can get ready for the emergence of Thomas and our high flying offense. The thing about the spread offense is that you don't rely on just one player, we have great talent at all offensive skill positions and I can't wait to stick it to everyone who is talking crap on U of O. I say bye bye Masoli, hello Thomas! GO DUCKS!

Oregon's season at stake

Who are you trying to kid?  Oregon had a lousy recruiting year.  USC, UCLA, Cal and Stanford all did better than Oregon in the recruiting wars.  Oregon played terrible in the Rose Bowl.  Oregon has not won a Rose Bowl since 1917, and has NEVER won a National Championship.  Oregon and their fans are getting desperate, and since they can not recruit well, they will take every marginal player that shows signs of promise on the field, no matter how questionable his life style and ability to do well in the class rooom is.  Oregon has earned their new nickname of "Thug U. West".  Kelly will find a way to get Masoli back into the fold this year if Oregon is a contender for the Pac 10 title. Your Stupid!!! UCLA had a Great class, Cal and Oregon had a GOOD class, USC out of 14 recruites thry have 7 WR. Poor Class. And with all that said it doesnt matter we are returining between 15 and 17 starters, and Thomas is the better QB.

Oregon isnt even in the top 25 schools for having kids in trouble your so FU%$#%^& dumb. Did you even play football or are you another band member that wishes he did.

Are you high? they had they're best recruiting class ever and if they lose any fans it will be the bandwagon folks they don't need anyway. They're games sell out at 108%. They lost Masoli for a season and they're back up in my and lost people's opinion has more ability than Masoli ever did. I wish you guys would seriously stop pretending that your Oregon fans and your dissapointed. Give me a break. The penalties that have been laid down here have been more severe than most programs.

Oregon's season at stake

I wouldn't go as far to say the season is at stake but the championship aspirations definitely are not there at the moment anymore. I love Darron Thomas and Nate Costa but don't make the mistake that they can just take Masoli's job and keep on humming. Masoli  for his faults was a great QB in our system, too bad he made an ignorant decision that hurt him and the University. We can contend for a Pac 10 title still, but are we a top 10 team after this? I wouldn't say so, but things can change.Go Ducks

Daron Thomas is the QB of the future for sure.  This kid was recruited highly and the only reason he wasn't nationally known was because Terrell Pryor was grabbing all the hype.  As a true Freshman (2 seasons ago), after the cheap shot by Boise St. to knock out our QB, he almost led Oregon back to a comeback win.  That is amazing considering the Ducks couldn't do anything vs that D until he came into the game.  I'm very disappointed in Masoli and sorry he won't be able to play his Sr. season, but REALLY excited to watch Daron Thomas lead this team back to a Pac-10 title.  Kudos to Kelly for making the tough decision and doing the right thing.  He's not worried, he knows exactly what he is getting in Thomas.

Oregon should be OK, the team is deep in the skilled positions.  In the last two years a 1,000 yard runnig back was replaced with a 1,500 yard running back.  A Heisman front runner was replaced with a Heisman potential.  The MVP of the Sun Bowl quit so he could play, there were too many qb's ahead of him.  Currently Oregon has a red shirt sophmore with two years experience in the system who has displayed his ability, 3 TD's in one quarter as a true freshman agains Boise State, a 5th year senior Pac-10 player of the week recipient and two hightly rated qb's among others to challenge for the qb position.

Duckss, don't bring UF into this. I will remind you that UF had the exact same situation as Oregon does now. His name was Cameron Newton and he was a quarterback who stole a computer. Guess what happened? He got kicked off and now is the upcoming starter for Auburn.

Oregon's season at stake

Ridiculous comments.  #1 Florida has had 27-28 arrests over the past 5 years.  Masoli is an idiot for stealing anything, but lets not forget it was a misdemeanor, most schools wouldn't even suspend a kid for this, i give Oregon and Kelly alot of respect for their decision.  #2 Masoli was a 5th stringer just two years ago, granted he has come along way and runs that offense very well, but Daron (Darin) Thomas is a stud in the wings and yes he's a bigger fast version of Dixon, WAY more highly recruited than masoli and did take snaps as a true freshman.  Anyone that says the season is over is ridiculous or just uninformed.  Anyone that says Oregon will lose recruits is insane, have you check the NFL depth charts lately?  Oregon is one of the most represented universities on NFL rosters, that won't change, the state of the art facilities won't change either.
