Kiffin pulls a Mike Gundy

Posted on: September 15, 2009 11:19 pm

The last thing I thought Lane Kiffin would do this is muzzle his quarterback. After a three-interception game against UCLA, Kiffin made his fifth-year guy Jonathan Crompton off limits to the media during Florida week.

A freshman? Maybe. If Crompton is old enough to vote and go to war, he can answer a few questions about playing a bad football game. Let's hope that JC is emotionally healed enough to lose 35-3 at Florida. (That, by the way, is a compliment. All this 63-10 stuff is crap. Tennessee's defense is too strong.)

"It blows me away sometimes how much hatred there is toward him ... " Kiffin said of Crompton.

"I'm not going to pull a Mike Gundy but the kid is in college. He's a college kid, he's a great student and I feel bad for him. Make sure you understand, there ain't a guy in the country trying harder than him. That's preparing harder or doing more to try and do things right. He's going to do well for us."

commonsense02222,
My point wasn't that Tennessee doesn't have a great defense, my point was that shutting down UCLA and Western Kentucky is not a good way to evidence it.  Tennessee may have a great D; they may have the best D in college football, but shutting down the 111th and 120th ranked offenses from last year isn't proof of that.  I'm guessing the commonsense part of your nickname is some kind of joke.

watch the games before you talkPretty sure that was Tennessee vs. UCLA I was watching on Saturday, though I did miss the Tennessee vs. Western Kentucky game.  Maybe some advise for you would be to read my point, not create a point for me.

I guess florida has a weak argument for a good defense against troy and charlston.  I guess their offense isn't very good either.  Ut has a very good defense and a very bad offense.  watch the games before you talk

titans4volz,
Seriously?  Your base for a great defense is holding UCLA to 19 and Western Kentucky to 7?  Just so you know, UCLA ranked 111th in total offense last year and Western Kentucky ranked 120th (those rankings are out of 120 teams).  Nice try though, but until I see some offense out of either one of these teams, your argument is extremely weak.

Tennesee's defense is not too strong. Eric Berry is great, thats all. They lost against UCLA, a 37th ranked team bys the cbssports.com 120. Now they travel to the swamp, in Tebow's senior season, to play a national championship team that literally has quotes of Kiffin's remarks posted on walls around their facilities. This team will eat Tennesee alive, and I believe the scoreboard will have the gators in the 50's. For Kiffin to not let Crompton talk about anything is absured. But im sure he will be off limits next week too, after he throws 4 more interceptions to a strong defense.

check your facts. ut was ranked 3rd in the nation in defense last year and held w. kentucky to7 and ucla to 19. and in that game the ut offense turned it over so close in their own end of the field even when they stopped ucla on their 1st possession they still could kick a field goal. and it happened 3 times

Kiffin pulls a Mike Gundy

I'm not going to but the kid is in college.
Of course he's not going to pull a Mike Gundy, he's not a man yet, he's not 40!

Make sure you understand, there ain't a guy in the country trying harder than him. That's preparing harder or doing more to try and do things right. He's going to do well for us.
Wait, is he talking about Crompton here or is he making a plea for himself to UT and it's boosters?  "He's going to do well for us"?  What?  Going to?  He's a fifth-year senior!  This is it for him.

I do find it funny that Kiffin, of all people, is forbidding anyone from talking...is he scared he's going to say something stupid?

A freshman? Maybe. If Crompton is old enough to vote and go to war, he can answer a few questions about playing a bad football game.Normally, i'd agree with you, but this kid received death threats last year follwoing his poor play.  I sure as heck wouldn't want my quarterback having to answer questions about whether or not he's scared of receiving more death threats, or any other questions for that matter.  I want Crompton to be focused and ready for this game, because he will have to play a perfect game for Tennessee to even have a chance.  Personally, I don't know why coaches would let anyone besides team captains speak to the media, because that's when you have a lineman calling an opposing coach a "bozo."  Just my opinion.
