Hey NBC, where is Mark Spitz?

You must all know by now that Michael Phelps won eight swimming gold medals in the Beijing Olympic Games. That’s an all-time record.

The previous record was seven golds, set by American Mark Spitz in Munich in 1972. Numbers don’t lie, Phelps broke Spitz’s record, by 1 medal.

On August 16, Phelps beat Serbia’s Milorad Cavic by 100th of a second in the 100-meter butterfly final to claim his 7th gold medal, which means that Phelps broke Spitz’s record by 100th of a second, the smallest margin possible in the pool.

I don’t mean to minimize Phelps’ record. The man won 16 Olympic medals in his life, including 14 golds. He is probably the greatest swimmer of all time. What he did in Beijing is one the greatest feats in sport history. No question. No discussion.

But, even though what Phelps did had never been done before –he attempted it four years ago in Athens but failed--, it is barely better than Spitz.

Phelps broke seven world records in Beijing, so did Spitz in Munich.

As much as Phelps deserves to be praised and his achievement celebrated, part of what he did was to remind us how fantastic a swimmer Spitz was.

It could have been a nice gesture for somebody to invite him to Beijing. USA Swimming. FINA The IOC. NBC. Somebody.

Hey NBC, where is Mark Spitz?

Huh?!?!?!?  "Shirley" you remember Spitz's failed prediction at the '68 games?  It took Spitz two Olympics to garner 9 total --- hardly close to Phelps, now is it?

Hey NBC, where is Mark Spitz?

Shouldn't really worry about Spitz.  Spitz is the most arrogant man I've ever seen and the only person matters to Marky... himself.   Let me know if he's done anything other than appearances in the last 30 years - any pro-bono.  If you heard him whine earlier in the week about not being invited and then spin it later in the week (Today show interview with Matt Lauer) as he had conflicting commitments in his schedule... you would realize that yes, his swimming achievements were spectacular - but, he will never be measure up to Phelps as a person.  He had the audacity to negatively comment about the new Speedo swimsuit how it doesn't work below speeds of 6 mph.  Apparently, it didn't hurt and they wore it for all the relays.    If you look at the people surrounding Phelps (i.e. his coach and Mother), he's very well grounded.  No one wants to hang around Spitz, you probably have to pay to.  I wonder how long Mark will last indicating that "he's the only one that knows what Michael is going through"... well that isn't quite accurate, Phelps has 14 gold medals and 8 in 2008.

I'm curious to hear about some personal experiences with Spitz... please leave them here.

Hey NBC, where is Mark Spitz?

Huh? They have interview Spitz a few times and he is in Beijing working for Botox. He's under contact with them as a spokesmen and user. NY Times stated he will top six figures this year alone in appearances, much of that is due to Phelps shining his grand light on Spitz's records again.
